Winter 2019

A WORD FROM DON

Beloved, as we enter this holy season, I trust these words, drawn from Boundaries for Your Soul by Cook and Miller, will refresh you all!

“Whether you feel as if you’re shining like a stained-glass window or broken like shards of glass, beautiful things happen when you invite Jesus to be near parts of your soul in need.  The more you know Him, the more you reflect His goodness.  Now we’re wondering—do the weary parts of your soul have anything they need to unburden?”

If so, let Jesus’ words from the Gospel of Matthew, refresh you as you go to the well of Living Water and drink deeply from Him.

“Are you tired?  Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me.
Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.
I’ll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Matthew 11:28 from The Message

“We will all be muddy and tattered children by the time we reach home…but
our bathwater has been drawn, fresh towels on the rack, and our new
clothes are hanging in the closet.”

-C.S. Lewis

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Thank you!!  The 2019 “Tacos for Trinity” was fantastic!

Presented by Regions Bank, and held at The Battery, Trinity’s 7th annual fundraiser on October 17 was a fun, family friendly evening complete with a bountiful buffet from Taco Mama and wide variety of delicious beverages. Our guests enjoyed tunes from the cover-band, Tarred & Feathered, & an outstanding multi-item Silent Auction from Birmingham retailers and local artists.  Raising awareness for what Trinity does, in and for the community, our annual benefit is one of our greatest sources for funding each year.  We were overwhelmed by attendee generosity and sponsorships which continue to help us bridge the expansive and expensive gap between private-practice therapy and community mental health counseling.

As always, our annual fundraiser prompts many new questions about and for Trinity’s services.  Funding for mental health, stress-related issues or disorders is more critical than ever.  Our staff continues to work diligently to meet the growing requests for appointments but we still need your help!

As you consider your end of the year giving, please consider donating to Trinity Counseling so that this new momentum is able to continue.  We are grateful to be able to report that 100% of your donations go toward providing scholarships and assistance!

We pray Blessings and Peace for all of you and your families this blessed and Holy Season.

If you have tried everything you know to feel better and you are still struggling, you are not alone—and we have something new to offer that may help.

Sometimes therapy, and even medication, is not enough to get some clients “unstuck” from lifelong, debilitating depression, anxiety and damaging effects of trauma.
We at Trinity Counseling are pleased to announce a new “tool” in our toolbox. It’s called IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback.

After years of therapy and trying various medications, one client recently had this to say after just two sessions of IASIS MCN:

“Depression and anxiety have been a constant in my life. I have been diagnosed with

both for many years. After seeking many treatment options I had become sedentary and

numb. I had accepted living in a depressed and anxious state. Within my first treatment I

experienced a calming effect. In the coming days, I noticed that colors were more vivid.

As more time has passed, I have felt as if a veil of depression is lifting and I can

experience a calmer life. I am hopeful and look forward to further progress.”

Participants in early pilot studies by the Veteran’s Administration and The University of California San Diego reported significant improvements in symptoms related to post traumatic stress, depression and anxiety. Large numbers of clients report a powerful return to clarity, energy, improved sleep, improved sense of humor, motivation and ease in getting things done. Others have experienced progress in focus, lessening of irritability, impatience and explosiveness, lessening of obsessive thinking and improved sleep. Even those who have had a closed head injury, TBI or psychological trauma have reported significant improvement in ability to function.

Here is what another client recently said after several sessions with IASIS MCN:

I am so impressed with the results I’ve had with my MCN therapy so far. At first I didn’t really notice the change, as it was gradual. When I first started I was experiencing a new onset of panic attacks, anxiety and depression. I was taking Xanax regularly and concerned about dependency. Seven treatments later...no Xanax, no crying spells and manageable anxiety — but now that is almost nonexistent. I’m still scheduling future treatments for anticipated new results.”

Here’s how it works

Various studies of the brain have shown people who tend to suffer from anxiety, post-traumatic stress, depression, and other conditions have shown high levels of abnormal delta wave activity. The IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback system has been proven to reduce or eliminate high levels of abnormal delta wave activity.  Brain scans done before and after treatment sessions with this technology have provided some astonishing results.

Listen without FRACKing

The next time someone you care about tells you about their day or something important to them, try this:

1) BE PRESENT with them. Put your phone down and remove any other possible distractions that could get in the way of you putting your full attention on your loved one.

2) Listen without FRACKing. No Fixing, Rescuing, Advising, Complaining, or Killing their experience.  Just listen.  This can be hard for men with their wives and can be hard for women with their children.  See if you can listen and sit with them in their experience; resisting the urge to fix the problem or tell them what they could do to make it better.  This is usually more about your own discomfort than theirs; wait until you are asked before giving advice.  And remember, the GOAL here is to Get Their Experience.  Repeat back to them what you are hearing and ask, “am I getting it?”  If they say yes, great!  If they say sort of, or any form of no, then ask them to tell you more and then try again.  This could feel a bit “technical” at first, but give it a shot.  As you begin to become aware of your own tendency to FRACK, it just may change you into a ‘pro-listener’!

JOINING OUR STAFF

Paulette Rowe

Our Dr. Paulette Rowe is Trinity Counseling’s mental health professional at Restoration Academy in Fairfield, AL, as well as meeting with clients at Trinity. She has a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Doctorate in Counseling Studies.  She tells us that her motivation to pursue an education in mental health was seeing family members and friends suffering in silence. She wanted to help.  Paulette says,

“… Some cultures [in our area] don’t believe in counseling, but I encourage those I know to seek counseling from a professional.  My goal is to educate others on how our mental health affects how we think, feel, and act.
It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make life choices.”

Paulette works with children, youth, couples and families.  Her goal is to help individuals improve their mental health and navigate the sometimes challenging path of life.
