1 - What's up

Continuing with the Braxton75 celebration, Tri-centric Foundation is expanding its New Braxton House digital catalog to include two albums which had been unavailable for some time (originally released from Sound Aspect Records):
  • Anthony Braxton with Robert Schumann String Quartet, recorded live in 1979. Composition No. 17 appears in two different configurations, which Anthony describes in his Composition Notes as "sixteen pages of multiple notation that can be prepared in any order or length for performance. The work is scored for the traditional string quartet and represents my first entry into this most dynamic context."
  • Kol Nidre with Anthony Braxton and Andrew Voight recorded in 1988 which includes Composition Nos. 85 and 87.
In March, Experiments In Opera will be presenting rare Braxton works: Compositions No. 279-283 composed for improvisational actor and improvising musicians. Performers engage with newspaper clippings, traditional improv comedy techniques and historical comedy tropes. Confirmed musicians include Braxton collaborators Ingrid Laubrock, Jessica Pavone, Nate Wooley and Kamala Sankaram. Kamala will also be appearing with Anthony Braxton himself at the Big Ears Festival for the three day Braxton75 celebration: Solo, Diamond Curtain Wall Trio and Thunder Music Ensemble world premiere.

The Art Ensemble of Chicago's Sixth Decade Tour will plan at BAM in Brooklin on May 2.

Roscoe Mitchell is receiving The NEA Jazz Masters Award 2020. On Apr 3 he will held a masterclass.  He also received a commission from Mutable Music to write an orchestral work that will feature Thomas Buckner: baritone, Scott Robinson: woodwinds, Roscoe Mitchell: woodwinds as improvisers. The name of this work is "Sustain and Run." The source material for this composition come from a transcription of one of Roscoe Mitchell's improvised solo on sopranino saxophone in Sao Paolo, Brazil on August 22 & 23, 2013. A part of this concert was released on selo Sesc CDSS, Roscoe Mitchell: Sustain and Run Ao Vivo Jazz Na Fabrica (solo concert) 2015 selo Sesc CDSS 0065/15.

Roscoe Mitchell have received a commission from the Fromm Foundation to write a composition for the Ensemble Dal Niente that will feature Ken Vandermark as the soloist. The name of the composition is "Last Trane To Clover Five." This composition is the transcription of the improvisation by Craig Taborn, Kikanju Baku and himself from his Conversations I CD.

2 - Upcoming releases/productions. And most recent ones

Liberty Ellman - "Last Desert" - Pi Recordings 85 Street
Date: March 27, 2020
"Last Desert, Ellman’s fourth release on Pi Recordings, takes its name from 4 Deserts, an annual ultramarathon through some of the harshest environments on Earth: from the Atacama in South America to the Gobi in China, the Sahara in Egypt, and the “White Desert” of Antarctica. Like the stark contrast between the beauty of these landscapes and the grueling nature of the races, Ellman’s compositions strike a charged balance between unfiltered emotion, a painterly lyricism, and pure intellectual depth. As Ellman explains: “There is something profound about the idea that these athletes have the will to compete in the most severe environments on earth. In a way this whole event gives me hope. Our species needs people with that level of tenacity to lead the way toward the future.” (PI PR)

Wayne Horvitz & Sara Schoenbeck are excited to announce their upcoming East and West Coast tour taking place Spring 2020. The tour is in support of Sara Schoenbeck/Wayne Horvitz Duo (SSWH)'s upcoming album release - out on Songlines in May 2020 (available digitally April 15) and will span both coasts over the months of March, April and May. They'll begin the west coast tour on April 17th at the Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Seattle and will continue down to Oregon and California culminating with a performance at Blue Whale Music in Los Angeles on April 25th and 26th. The tour will resume on the east coast on May 14th at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, N.Y., before culminating at the New School of Music in Cambridge, Mass., on May 17th.

Anna Webber
The Webber/Morris Big Band (band Anna co-leads with Angela Morris) is releasing its debut album "Both Are True" on April 3, 2020 on Greenleaf Music. The release concert will be in April 4 at The Jazz Gallery, NYC

Ches Smith with We All Break just finished recording a new album. We All Break is Ches Smith's project that exists at the intersection of Haitian Vodou and new jazz. The core quartet of Matt Mitchell, Daniel Brevil, Markus Schwartz and Smith was augmented by Sirene Dantor Rene (vocals), Miguel Zenon (saxophone), Nick Dunston (bass) and Fanfan Jean Guy Rene (Haitian Vodou drums). The mix of both original (by Daniel Brevil) and traditional Vodou songs with original composition (by Ches Smith) was 9 months in the making. As each of the additional musicians brought themselves so wholly into it, We All Break gained an extended family. Its' release is looking like late 2020 or early 2021, with touring in the USA and Europe to follow.
