1 - What's up
What's up? Hopefully a new world after the COVID-19's outbreak. Let's build it together. After many bad news let's start with some good ones.
Yesterday, Akamu received this mail from the American Academy in Berlin:
".... The American Academy in Berlin is pleased to announce its Berlin Prize recipients for 2020-21. Included among them is a musician from your institution: Composer, flutist, and saxophonist Anna Webber. (....) The Berlin Prize is awarded annually to scholars, writers, composers, and artists from the United States who represent the highest standards of excellence in their fields. (...) Best regards from Berlin..." So check this out. Congrats Anna! Do you wonder why? Well, listen to this if you hasn't done it yet.
Going on with the good news, we want to share with you another fantastic one: Anthony Davis’s opera The Central Park Five has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music. The annually awarded prize is for a distinguished musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the previous year. The Pulitzer citation for the opera, featuring a libretto by Richard Wesley, which received a New Music USA grant for commission fees in 2015 and received its premiere on June 15, 2019 at the Long Beach Opera, describes it as “a courageous operatic work, marked by powerful vocal writing and sensitive orchestration, that skillfully transforms a notorious example of contemporary injustice into something empathetic and hopeful.”
At least, the almost global lockdown somehow has given the people the opportunity to stop rolling around for a while and to think at their own life and the important things happened. A jazz concert could have been one of them? For sure for Ambrose Akinmusire especially if the very first jazz concert he assisted was an Art Ensemble of Chicago's one. Nate Chinen tells us that story. The first track of his sixth album (release date: 5th june) is dedicated to Roscoe Mitchel, "Mr Roscoe" (consider the simultaneous). Enjoy it.
Matthew Shipp began celebrating his landmark 60th year on earth with the creation of a new solo piano recording—The Piano Equation—which is also the inaugural release on the brand new Tao Forms Reecording. His new upcoming solo will be released (May 22, 2020)
Wayne Horvitz has released a PDF version of his book of compositions, Little Pieces for the Piano. During this chaotic time of closures, when students and parents alike are at home, Wayne has also composed a series of pieces, composed almost entirely for beginning- and intermediate-level players, intended to be companion pieces to those found in Little Pieces
And our Brazilian artists? What about their lockdown? Few images and notes in a short message to the world made by Yamandu Costa. Here again Yamandu along with Clari Costa. His mum. A special distance duet between the talented voice of Mônica Salmaso and the italian clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi. Actually Monica very interesting duets almost everyday since the beginning of the lockdown.
If you want to watch at something longer just relax, have a seat... and a drink: Toninho Ferragutti on #SescaoVivo on May 11, 2020 and Siba's magnificient voice and guitar on #SescAoVivo on May 1, 2020
2 - Upcoming releases/productions. And the most recent ones
Wayne Horvitz’ awaited new upcoming release (May 22, 2020): Sara Shoenbeck and Wayne Horvitz, Cell Walk (Songlines Records). Available digitally since April 15. Meanwhile you could listen to a wonderful “No Blood”, 2019 performance
We suggest you to take inspiration and good vibes from Gabriele Mitelli and his very recent house performance on cornet while is wife is preparing some self-cultivated delicious food for “Musica da camera” project of Centro d’Arte Padova. Buon appetito!
The lockdown is not always that bad. Even in Lombardy
