GFWC Florida Juniors News
July 2019
From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs
President Sharon and I were so honored to represent GFWC Florida at the GFWC International Convention in Austin last week. Thanks to YOUR hard work, we brought home many awards for GFWC Florida, including first place awards in ESO, Arts, Conservation, Education, Home Life and International Outreach! The full list will be on the GFWC Florida Website soon. We also participated in a lip sync to Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" with our Southern Region fellow Presidents and Directors (we were FABULOUS), and I was honored to carry Florida's flag in the opening ceremonies as Sharon escorted Jolie Frankfurth, GFWC Treasurer (and still a GFWC Florida Junior too - as is Sharon!)

The reporting forms for your 2019 projects are updated and ready to begin completing. All you need to know is here
And the
nominations and awards forms have been updated, so take a look now and think about who in your club deserves special recognition, or what project your club could do that would qualify for a One Voice for Children grant. You can also keep track of interaction that you do with other Juniors clubs, as well as Woman's Clubs and Juniorette Clubs, and think about applying for a Federation Interaction Award.

I have really enjoyed visiting clubs and meeting members! Please invite me to a club meeting if you haven't already -- I'd love to come give your members some info about GFWC & GFWC Florida as well as some encouragement and inspiration. I am here for YOU!

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --

Shannon Bailey, GFWC Florida Director of Junior Clubs

Women in the Military Grand Initiative Project Ideas
  • Assemble "Veterans Bags" - bags for returning personnel containing nail polish, hand sanitizer, nail file, lip balm, trail mix, thank you note cards, etc. Adding a personal note thanking them for their service or supporting their husbands who are active duty.
  • Collect formal evening gowns and cocktail dresses to donate to a near- by military bases. The bases hold several dressy events and balls during the year and this affords women to select a gown/dress so they are able to attend the event.
  • Sponsor baby showers for pregnant veterans at military bases. Contact your local Fisher House, offer to provide food for a special event or sponsor a party for children staying there while visiting a parent. Fisher Houses are located at military and VA Medical centers around the world. The Fisher House Foundation builds comfort homes where military and veterans' families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. Currently there are 77 homes in operation. (For additional info: www.FisherHouse.org)
  • Attend Wreaths Across America events at National Cemeteries.
  • Invite a female veteran to speak at your monthly club meeting.
  • Contact your local VFW and American Legion to see if they have women veterans as members. If they do, plan a thank you tea or ice cream social for the ladies.
  • Gold Star Mother's Day - September 30. National Gold Star Mother's Day was created to recognize and honor those that have lost their son or daughter while serving our country in the United States Armed Forces. (www.Goldstarmoms.com)
  • Blue Star Mothers is an organization that provides support for mothers who have sons or daughters in active service in the US Armed Forces. (www.Bluestarmothers.org) Look online to see if there is an organization in your area and invite one of the members to speak at a club meeting - November would be an awesome meeting as we observe Veterans Day.
