GFWC Florida Juniors News
August 2019
Registration is NOW open for the GFWC Florida Fall Board of Directors meeting in September -- make it a girls' weekend! Click here for all the details.
From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs
We had a fantastic (hot and sweaty!) Junior Summer Fun Day on July 13th at Treehoppers Aerial Adventure Park! We did some fun icebreakers, played tenzi, had lunch, and then took to the trees. We challenged ourselves and encouraged each other, and headed home with sore muscles and great memories.

I am so excited to invite you to the 2019 GFWC Florida Fall Board of Directors Meeting. The weekend will be full of celebration and lots of opportunities for FUN. We are delighted to host TRISHA SCHAFER, GFWC Director of Junior Clubs, at this meeting. Trisha is a lot of fun and is looking forward to seeing what the buzz of GFWC Florida is all about! Trisha will be our keynote speaker at Saturday’s dinner, so don’t miss it.

GFWC Florida will work together to fulfill the GFWC GRAND INITIATIVE of supporting our female military veterans by asking clubs once again to bring gift cards for FISHER HOUSE. Fisher House is a home away from home for families of military veterans receiving medical care at VA centers. There are 6 Fisher House locations in Florida. Please bring grocery or Walmart gift cards for the Orlando Fisher House, where our Thursday DAY of SERVICE will take place.

I can’t wait for the BOOT SCOOTIN’ FUN NIGHT, featuring the Andrew Morris Band, on Saturday. We’ll have line dancing and a costume contest, so gather your best honky tonk duds or rodeo gear and win prizes — you can fly solo, or groups of up to 8 can be judged together. Come out and enjoy the music!

All clubs are invited to donate a fundraising basket with the theme of SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY for the Junior Fundraising table. You’ll want to raise your glass or feel like a superhero for our Junior fundraising items! Proceeds help to fund One Voice for Children grants, Junior Education Scholarships and Youth Leadership awards – thank you for supporting Junior Fundraising. We will also host a SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR during the weekend, so plan to shop for yourself and gifts — and you can also buy books to donate!

Juniors will meet on our own at our JUNIOR BUSINESS SESSION as well as a JUNIOR REPORTING WORKSHOP, and we’ll join all clubwomen in WORKSHOPS on many other topics. We’ll learn about new volunteer projects and initiativesthat we can take back to our clubs, and we’ll also learn leadership, membership, public relations and fundraising tips that can help our clubs grow and thrive.

Come be empowered and encouraged at Saturday’s lunch as we learn how to find JOY and BALANCE in being a volunteer. The weekend won’t be complete without a WALK for ST JUDE through the hotel on Sunday morning. We will wrap up our weekend in true BOOK HEROES fashion celebrating the 50thanniversary of SESAME STREET at our Sunday Luncheon. You won’t want to miss this weekend – I look forward to seeing you there!

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --

GFWC Florida 2020-2022 Junior Planning Committee
It’s time to start building the Junior Planning Committee for the next administration that begins May 2020. It's important that our Junior Planning Committee consists of members from a variety of clubs - new clubs, established clubs, large clubs, small clubs and in between clubs from all over the state.  The Junior Planning Committee consists of the Junior Executive Committee, Junior District Directors, Chairmen, and Committee Members and we want you to serve!

You may be asking yourself what these positions entail.  The Junior District Directors communicate with the clubs in their District and are elected, and the Junior Executive Committee coordinates all Junior activities and programs (see last month’s issue for info on elected positions.) Committee Members are appointed as part of a committee with Woman's Club members and Junior members who will meet periodically (normally at Fall Board and/or Convention) to discuss issues related to their committee. Chairmen are also appointed, and require a bigger commitment because they are responsible for the workshops at Fall Board (2-5 hours planning the workshop around August to present in September at Fall Board) and judging the club reports and awards (5-10 hours late January/early February) and then presenting awards at Convention each year.  The workshops at Fall Board are normally 15-20 minutes which is really easy to fill up because there is so much information you will want to share and you may want to incorporate a fun game or activity.

We hold a Summer Planning Workshop to help you learn your responsibilities.  Please click here to review the form and all the positions.  Please complete it and return it to me as soon as possible, but no later than November 15. If you have questions, please email me!

From the Junior Planning Committee
by Sherry Clendinen, GFWC Florida Junior International Outreach Chair

Hello GFWC Florida Juniors – summer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner. I wanted to give you a few ideas on how you can raise money for our GFWC International Partners during this spooky time of the year.

• Trick or Treat for UNICEF is a fun way to get the children in your life involved in giving back.  It program of children collecting money at Halloween time to help children around the world. The funds raised, will help save and improve children's lives around the world. UNICEF works in 190 countries and reaches millions of children with immunizations, education, health care, nutrition, safe water and sanitation, emergency relief, and more. The 2019 kits will be available to order (for free) in a few weeks from UNICEF. The kits will be shipped out in mid-September. I have a few boxes left over from last year’s campaign and will bring those to Fall Board.

• A “hole” lotta fun for <Insert name of the international partner of your choice>. Start a Halloween-themed cornhole tournament. Build and decorate cornhole boards to look like jack-o’-lanterns or other Halloween themes. Ask members to make a donation to compete in the tournament. You can even plan a team competition at a district meetings.

• During your club’s annual pumpkin patch or similar event, have a “Livestock Show and Sale” to benefit Heifer International. Make cupcakes or cookies and decorate them to resemble cows, sheep, pigs, as well as other farm animals. Sell them during your bake sale or hold a “livestock auction.”

• Another yummy way to earn money during your fall events is with shots of chocolate mousse. Fill shot glasses with this dessert and ask for donations for Shot@Life.

I cannot wait to see you all at Fall Board and hearing about the projects you have planned.
