GFWC Florida Juniors News
January 2019
From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs
Hello GFWC Florida Juniors -- Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had a great holiday season and that your club has taken time to celebrate everything you accomplished in 2018. I hope you are looking forward to 2019 with anticipation as you fill your club calendar.  I firmly believe that GFWC offers what women are looking for: opportunities for meaningful service, opportunities for meaningful relationships, and opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. How is your club incorporating all of these elements into your club year?

I hope ALL Juniors are subscribed to Membership Monday, the GFWC Florida weekly newsletter. If not, please subscribe! It always has the most current info you need to know. This Juniors News is specifically for Juniors clubs so you'll want to subscribe to both! Club Presidents, please forward this email to all your club members and ask them to subscribe to both newsletters using the links below. And let us know -- what would YOU like to see in this newsletter? What can GFWC Florida Juniors do to help your club?

One of my goals between now and May 2020 is to visit every Juniors club in Florida at least once. I would love to come speak at a club meeting or join you for an event. I really enjoyed visiting clubs in December, I have several club visits on my calendar for the next few months, and I would love to add your club meeting to my calendar. Please add me to your club's email list and invite me! I may not see Facebook event invites -- please email, call or text me. I can't wait to come see you!

Save these 2019 dates:
April 5-7: GFWC Florida Annual Convention in Orlando
September 20-22: GFWC Florida Fall Board of Directors in Orlando
Both of these meetings are open to all GFWC Florida members. Plan now to attend as a club -- make it a girls' weekend!

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --

Happy New Year!  With the deadline for 2018 reports quickly approaching, below are 6 tips to help you get started.

6.  Ownership.  Decide who will be responsible for completing reports.  Will each program chair be responsible for their tab or will one person be responsible for completing the entire document?
5.  Resources.  Download the Junior reporting handbook and report form under Member Resource at www.gfwcflorida.com.
4.  Prepare.  Read the Junior reporting handbook.  This handbook was created for you and will likely answer all of your questions.  While writing reports this handbook will be your bff.  Still have questions?  Ask your JDD or myself.
3.  $ Data Collection.  Request a copy of your club’s remittance form and list of charities with the amount donated in 2018 from your club treasurer.  The remittance form will show money your club donated to GFWC and GFWC Florida, number of members, district number and the information needed for tab 1 in the reporting spreadsheet.
2.  Project Data Collection.  Scroll through your social media accounts, newsletters, and minutes to make a list of activities completed.  I find it helpful to list by month to ensure all are accounted and then go back to determine which area to report.
1. Start.  Sometimes the hardest part of any project is simply starting.  Open the spreadsheet, go to the first tab and enter your club’s name and basic information.  Congrats one tab down!  Remember continuous progress is better than delayed perfection.

We are excited to read about Florida Juniors’ projects!   Get started today!  You got this!

GFWC Grand Initiative: GFWC Clubs will plant 1,000 trees for Arbor Day (Report under Conservation in 2019 reports):

Florida began celebrating Arbor Day in 1886 and had one of the first Arbor Day celebrations in the USA. Make your community greener this Arbor Day, January 18th 2019. To celebrate Arbor Day, your club can do projects ranging from planting trees to cleaning up your local park.  The GFWC Grand Initiative is specifically requesting that we plant trees.

Ideas include:
Contact your local city government to see if they give out free trees. Many areas offer native trees for free to residents. Everyone could use more shade! For tree planting instructions, please visit https://www.arborday.org/celebrate/tree-planting.cfm.
Plant native, water efficient plants on your property. The University of Florida offers extension services to help Florida residents plant native plants and help guide regarding care of those plants. To find your local office, visit http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/find-your-local-office/.
It’s not just about planting trees; it’s about making Florida a cleaner, greener state. Let’s get out there and have a great Arbor Day!

The GFWC St. Petersburg Junior Woman’s Club and GFWC St. Petersburg Juniorettes helped spread a lot of holiday cheer this December.  Juniors participated in the toy distribution at Christmas Toy Shop where members and their children helped parents and caregivers select gifts for their children.  This is a long-standing favorite project for our club.  The Juniors along with the Juniorettes also helped at the Northside Benevolence Ministries Christmas Distribution where members helped families select clothing, stuffed animals, books and toys for their children.  In addition, each family was given a bag of Christmas fixings and a gift card to purchase a ham or turkey for their holiday dinner.  It is so heart-warming give and spread joy and our members helped bless many families this December.  291 families we helped at the Northside distribution and countless more at the Christmas Toy Shop!
