GFWC Florida Juniors News
October 2019
From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs
We had such a great weekend at GFWC Florida Fall Board... more than 70 Juniors had fun together and learned in workshops, raised funds for One Voice for Children grants, Youth Leadership Scholarships and St. Jude, and enjoyed a Scholastic Book Fair and celebrating 50 years of Sesame Street! We loved having GFWC Director of Junior Clubs Trisha Schafer with us for all the fun! Mark your calendars NOW for our GFWC Florida Annual Convention May 14-16,2020 in Orlando.

I hope your club has made plans for an event or project to celebrate Advocates for Children's Week, October 20-26. Post photos on your Facebook page and email them to me so we can feature them next month!

Juniors reporting forms are on the website and dues remittance forms have been emailed to clubs -- please contact GFWC Florida HQ if your President hasn't received them. See the end of this newsletter for updated GFWC Grand Initiative goals, and keep reporting those Book Heroes projects! There are also links to all the reporting info you need...

Annual District Meetings will take place October 26th through November 2nd. GFWC Florida President Sharon Oliphant and I will visit districts 8-14, and GFWC Florida President Elect Dianne Foerster and GFWC Director Elect of Junior Clubs Candice Postel will visit districts 1-7. Hope to see you there!

I still have 10 clubs that I haven't visited! If I haven't been to YOUR club meeting yet, will you email me so I can get on your calendar?

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --
Shannon Bailey, GFWC Florida Director of Junior Clubs

From the Junior Planning Committee

Carla Connelly, GFWC Signature Project (Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention) Junior Chairman: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence isn't just about the physical aspect, yet also covers mental, emotional, financial abuse as well.  For decades it has been a "taboo topic" and sadly still is, in many parts of the United States.  We all need to reach a "See Something, say something" mentality.  Victims need to stop being made to feel at fault and the abusers need to be held accountable.  We can do simply things like tying a purple ribbon around a tree, paint one finger nail purple, show others support and that it is okay to speak up. Click the photo below for more information:

Joanna Williams, Junior Homelife Chairman: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!   Wear pink this month for your meetings and events, participate in a cancer walk, develop a buddy system for your annual mammogram, support “pink” businesses in your area.  There are so many ways to promote awareness!  What are you doing in your club?
