From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs
We have celebrated everything that clubs accomplished last year and have turned our focus ahead. Many of our clubs take a few months off during the summer but I know that projects and socials are still happening. President Sharon and I will be representing GFWC Florida at the GFWC International Convention in Austin in just a few weeks. We hope to bring home many awards for GFWC Florida!

The reporting forms for your 2019 projects are updated and ready to begin completing. All you need to know is here
And the nominations and awards forms have been updated, so take a look now and think about who in your club deserves special recognition, or what project your club could do that would qualify for a One Voice for Children grant. You can also keep track of interaction that you do with other Juniors clubs, as well as Woman's Clubs and Juniorette Clubs, and think about applying for a Federation Interaction Award.

I have really enjoyed visiting clubs and meeting members! Please invite me to a club meeting if you haven't already -- I'd love to come give your members some info about GFWC & GFWC Florida as well as some encouragement and inspiration. I am here for YOU!

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --

GFWC History:  We hear a lot about Jane Cunningham Croly, but who was the first president of GFWC?  Charlotte Emerson Brown, born in Andover, Massachusetts and later a resident of East Orange, New Jersey, was the daughter of professor Ralph Emerson, a relative of the poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson.  After studying music and languages in Europe, Brown came back to the U.S. and in 1879 was elected president of the Woman's Club of Orange.

Brown attended the March 1889 meeting of Sorosis in New York City that organized the ratification convention of April 22-25, 1890. At that time, a constitution and bylaws for the General Federation of Women's Clubs were adopted and officers elected. Brown was elected the new organization's first president.

As the first president, Brown helped create many of its policies, including those for election, organization, and rotation in office. She also traveled widely to greet new clubs and inspire others to become members of GFWC. She presided over two biennial conventions: the first in Chicago and the second in Philadelphia.

During Brown's administration, the Woman's Cycle became the club's official magazine, and the idea of state federations began. By the end of her term, there were five state federations (Maine, Massachusetts, Iowa, Kansas and Utah).

Snippets of our history:
1962 — GFWC Juniors are the first national group to support the work of Project Hope. Members raise funds and provide supplies for the peacetime hospital ship S.S. Hope, which provides medical assistance and training to developing nations.

1965 — "Operation Little Bells" was a special CARE project adopted by GFWC's Junior membership during the 1964—1966 administration. GFWC Juniors raised more than $40,000 and built five schools in rural Mexico.

1966 — GFWC members adopt the goal to "Build a Youth for a Better World." Juniorettes, a special membership category for young women between 14 and 18 years old, debuts in March 1968.

From the Junior Planning Committee
by Lauren Yeatter, GFWC Florida Junior Arts Chair

Supporting the Arts in our communities is a priority that GFWC Florida Junior Clubs have tirelessly promoted through many passion projects and programs. Whether hosting fundraisers for school art supplies, judging kids’ art shows, or managing a dance school, we Juniors continue to encourage the Arts in our schools and communities.

As selfless women who are mothers, sisters, professionals, and community leaders, we often think of taking care of everyone else first, before taking care of ourselves. This includes nurturing the creativity within. We should remember that Art is not intimidating or perfect, and we should take the time to find an outlet for our own creativity and inspiration. Maya Angelou said, “Find a beautiful piece of art. If you fall in love with Van Gogh or Matisse or John Oliver Killens, or if you fall in love with the music of Coltrane, the music of Aretha Franklin, or the music of Chopin - find some beautiful art and admire it, and realize that that was created by human beings just like you, no more human, no less.”

GFWC offers Club members opportunities to express our creativity through our Arts and Crafts competition (which include ceramics, jewelry, scrapbooking, knitting/crochet, quilting, drawing, painting, photography, and much more) and contests for Photography, Writing, Websites, and Newsletters. So get started at a Paint-and-Sip class. Take photos of your community and Club events. Write the short story or poem that you’ve been meaning to do. And submit your Art for consideration for your Club, District, and State Art shows and contests. Now is the time to get started and find your inspiration, as the Club Art Shows should be planned for January of each year, and entries should be completed in the year prior to the Art Show. If you have any questions, please contact me.

While we continue to support the Arts through our projects, let’s also nourish our own souls with, song, dance, art, and crafts!

The GFWC Lake Placid Junior Woman's Club donated 195 lbs of food products to Manna Ministries of Lake Placid, a local food bank.  Director Anita Hurley  said that this food donation would help them assist needy families throughout the entire summer!
Members of the GFWC Brandon Junior Woman’s Club Public Issues committee delivered several boxes of snack items and baked goods to District 2 and District 5 of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.  These “goodie” boxes were to show the club’s support and appreciation to the policemen and women who serve their community.  Along with the snacks the club donated 2 large bags of stuffed animals and books that are given out to children when a deputy encounters them on a traffic call or in a domestic violence situation.
Book Heroes project are going strong! GFWC Junior Woman's Club of Midtown partnered with the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend to donate almost 100 sets of books to a local elementary school. As part of JWCM President Lauren Hayman's project, two local elementary schools will be provided books for their First Grade students. Principal of Sabal Palm Elementary is pictured with the first delivery and more are on the way! JWCM members are proud to be GFWC Florida Book Heroes!
