GFWC Florida Juniors News
February 2019
From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs
Reporting for 2018 projects is behind us and nearly all of the awards and grants deadlines have passed. Thank you to the 19 Juniors clubs who reported -- your Junior Chairmen are loving reading about the great projects, socials and fundraisers your clubs accomplished in 2018. We received more than 50 award nominations and grant applications! Winners and recipients will be announced at our GFWC Florida Annual Convention in April. There are still a few contests with February and March deadlines -- check out the GFWC Florida website for details.

I hope ALL Juniors are subscribed to Membership Monday, the GFWC Florida weekly newsletter. If not, please subscrib, and submit photos! It always has the most current info you need to know. You can also subscribe (and submit) to GFWC News & Notes, the weekly email from our HQ in Washington, DC. GFWC Florida clubs are frequently featured! This Juniors News is specifically for Juniors clubs so you'll want to subscribe to all three. Club Presidents, please forward this email to all your club members and ask them to subscribe to all the newsletters using the links below. And let us know -- what would YOU like to see in this newsletter? What can GFWC Florida Juniors do to help your club?

Save these 2019 dates:
April 5-7: GFWC Florida Annual Convention in Orlando -- call will be sent out in the next week
September 20-22: GFWC Florida Fall Board of Directors in Orlando

Both of these meetings are open to all GFWC Florida members. Plan now to attend as a club -- make it a girls' weekend!

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --

Protocol 101
by Jeanne Takeda, GFWC Florida Junior Parlimentarian

Protocol is just the practice of social graces, simple amenities, common courtesy, tack and diplomacy, which create a positive and lasting impression.
Protocol, like many customs, can change with the times. However, no matter what changes occur with time, manners, common sense, and courtesy remain the same. It is good practice for each organization to adopt rules of protocol that best suit its needs.

Protocol topics include:
  • Invitations and Care of Guests
  • Ceremonies
  • Order of Rank
  • Head Tables and Reserved Seating
  • GFWC Pin, Pin(s) and Name tag
  • General Etiquette

From the Junior Planning Committee
by Pimjai Krisanakaset, GFWC Florida Junior Education Chair

One of the 7 Grand Initiatives is for GFWC members to donate books written by Dr. Seuss. We already collected nearly 400 at our Fall Board in September! March 2, 2019, Dr. Seuss' birthday, will be National Read Across America Day. So let's get together with our club members and do something fun that involves reading within our local community!

Did you know? Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO) is GFWC's honorary educational society, founded in 1928 to help members continue their self-education when formal education was not available to them. Today, the society still thrives with members who love to read and who are life-long learners. As part of BOOK HEROES, we are re-emphasizing ESO to our GFWC Florida members this administration.

I have launched an GFWC Florida ESO group on Facebook to help promote this society of ladies that loves to read within GFWC. Stephanie (ESO chairman) and I would like to get the Juniors more involved in ESO. It is only $5 to join and you first start out as a pledge, once you read 5 books from 4 different categories, a total of 20, then you will become a member. On the Facebook page, I want everyone to recommend books that they are reading to other members. Please don’t forget to share the page with your club. Click here for more info about ESO and search on Facebook for the GFWC Florida ESO group or click the link at the bottom of this email.

If you ladies ever have any questions, please email me at any time. Thank you!

GFWC St. Petersburg Junior Woman's Club's MLK Day of Service Books Across St. Petersburg Project.  We dedicated two libraries, one at Family Promise and one at the Sunshine Center and we also passed out books at the MLK Day parade.  This project was a joint project with North Pinellas Women's Club and it was made possible with a grant from St. Petersburg College.
Christmas morning saw GFWC Lake Placid Junior Woman's Club President, Joanne Schiefer and GFWC Lake Placid Juniorettes President, Aubrey Lanier, giving away 150 children's books that had been donated by the Lake Placid Juniors to the Eddie Mae Henderson Foundation at her 41st annual Free Christmas Meal in Lake Placid, FL. Everyone is welcome. Juniorette Aubrey Lanier has spent the last 7 years helping with this worthy cause by coordinating the toy giveaway and it was a pleasure for the Lake Placid Juniors to join in for the first time this year. A visit from Santa, lots of presents, and delicious food was enjoyed by all!
GFWC Plant City Juniors recently received Best of Plant City Community Service Award from the Plant City Chamber of Commerce. The club has added a 16th school to their annual shoe project. PC Juniors give an average of 40 shoes to each school!
