GFWC Florida Juniors News
March 2019
From the Florida Director of Junior Clubs

I am so excited to invite you to the 2019 GFWC Florida Annual Convention. The weekend will be full of celebration and lots of opportunities for FUN. We are delighted to host Mary Ellen Brock, GFWC International President, at this convention. Mary Ellen is a lot of fun and was a Junior for many years!

GFWC Florida will work together to fulfill the GFWC GRAND INITIATIVE of supporting our female military veterans by asking clubs to bring items for FISHER HOUSE. Fisher House is a home away from home for  families of military veterans receiving medical care at VA centers. There are 6 Fisher House locations in Florida. Please bring cereal, snack bars, pantry microwave meals, laundry detergent, and books for children and adults, as well as puzzle books (crossword, word search, etc.) Feel free to put your club’s Book Heroes labels in the books!

I can’t wait for the WILD THING LIP SYNC BATTLE FUN NIGHT on Saturday. Clubs, districts and members can register to perform your favorite song with WILD in the title or lyrics! Email the song you want to perform to Candice Postel, GFWC Florida Director Elect of Junior Clubs, by March 15th — songs are first-come first served so get your group together and be the first to secure your song!

All clubs are invited to donate a fundraising basket with the theme of ANIMAL KINGDOM for the Junior Fundraising table. You’ll want to raise your glass or feel like a superhero for our Junior fundraising items! Proceeds help to fund the One Voice for Children grants, Junior Education Scholarship and Youth Leadership awards – thank you for supporting Junior Fundraising.

Juniors will meet at our Junior Business Session and learn about new volunteer projects and initiatives that we can take back to our clubs. We’ll also learn leadership, membership, public relations and fundraising tips that can help our clubs grow and thrive.

Throughout the weekend we will celebrate the amazing projects that all GFWC Florida BOOK HEROES accomplished in 2018. We will wrap up our weekend celebrating the WONDER WOMEN of FEDERATION at our Sunday Luncheon as we award GFWC Florida’s highest honors to members and clubs who are truly Living the Volunteer Spirit. You won’t want to miss this weekend – I look forward to seeing you there!

So proud to represent you and to serve you  --

Junior Fundraising at Annual Convention
by Lauren Leahey, GFWC Florida Junior Finance Director

Have you attended a State Meeting in the past?  If not, have you seen photos of the heavily laden tables covered with gift baskets?
These baskets and those working the table are supporting GFWC Florida Juniors.  This is the Fundraising Table.   We have beautiful things to purchase, like the Book Heroes T-shirts you may have seen, and stemless wineglasses for the Super Woman in us all.
We also accept donated gift baskets submitted by Members, Clubs, Committees and the like.  We then sell opportunity tickets so that lucky attendees may WIN those baskets!
It's a wonderful treat to have the opportunity to share the winners at our Luncheon.  The Florida Juniors Executive Committee then uses the funds raised to support causes we in the State feel strongly for.  Come on by to chat if you have any questions.
From the Junior Planning Committee
by Kelly Holmes, GFWC Florida Legislation, Public Policy and Resolution Chairman

May Mann Jennings Resolution: The Legislation, Public Policy, Resolution Committee is pleased to present this resolution at Convention for membership approval. The resolution's intent is to ensure that May Mann Jennings continues to be nominated by GFWC Florida for the Florida Woman's Hall of Fame annually until she makes it as a top ten finalist at which point she will be resubmitted automatically if not chosen that year.  Further, it asks that clubs help with the effort as needed which may include contacting legislators or the Governor asking for support of the nomination and/or for her to be selected based on her numerous contributions to not only women but all citizens of Florida.  Getting someone into the Hall of Fame is no easy task and we don't know how long it will take but regardless of who our leaders are we want to ensure that this effort continues until we are successful.  The committee would appreciate your support of our first resolution in more than five years for GFWC Florida.  If it passes, it will be the only active GFWC Florida resolution.   Should your club have a public policy issue they would like GFWC Florida to support that is in line with GFWC's objectives and resolutions, please contact us.  We'd love more resolutions to review and present in 2020. Read the Resolution about May Mann Jennings here.

Members of the GFWC Brandon Junior Woman’s Club delivered Valentine goodies to Station 11 and Station 22 as a show of their appreciation to the firefighters for their service to the community.  The goodies included a basket of snack items, heart shaped donuts, cards and home made sweets.  A large bag of teddy bears was also donated which will be given out to children that the first responders may encounter
on one of their calls.
GFWC supports the organization known as Soles for Souls which provides shoes for those in need across the globe.  GFWC Brandon Junior Woman’s Club collects new and gently used shoes at each of their monthly meetings in support of this cause. Shoes are then delivered to DSW shoe store where they are then sent to the Soles for Souls organization for distribution.
The GFWC Pasco Junior Woman's Club clothing swap was super fun, and they had a very FULL van of clothes going to Sunrise of Pasco, Inc!
