READ: Data 4 Nature & Peatlands Gathering reports out now

Dear members,

Another huge month for the environment with the adoption of the Kunming Declaration at Cop15 and a major swell in global and business awareness and support for measures to combat the joint crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.

On October 7-9, we held our big peat meet-up - and the Peatlands Gathering team will be presenting findings from the successful sold-out event at the upcoming Cop26. We had a great response to our two-day online event and subsequent field trips to bog sites around Ireland and you can catch up on the recordings and our conference report below.

We also recently issued our Data4Nature report with five key recommendations to improve the way environment-related data is gathered and made accessible for nature conservation research - access the report recommendations below.

Irish Bioeconomy Week took place with a series of events including the Teagasc map series featuring our INCASE project natural capital mapping work on the Shannon estuary. We also marked international Business & Biodiversity Week working on our new National Business & Biodiversity Platform, in conjunction with National Biodiversity Data Centre and Business in the Community Ireland backed by Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine & NPWS/ Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage, developing our new platform to support the private sector in taking action to combat the biodiversity crisis so watch this space for more news.

Also keep an eye on our social media channels - Twitter & LinkedIn - and our website for updates on this and other environmental and natural capital developments.

We issued the final report from our Data4Nature event, compiled from feedback gathered from our workshop with data experts, environmental data users and the public on issues associated with working with nature-related data from various sources. The event was backed by the Open Data Engagement Fund of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with additional funding from the Office of Public Works and the findings delivered to the Minister for State with Responsibility for Communications Ossian Smyth. The final report provides key recommendations for improving the availability, accuracy and accessibility of data for natural capital and nature conservation. Read it here.

WATCH: The recordings for Peatlands Gathering 2021 are now online and key messages from the event are set to be delivered at the Peatlands Pavilion at Cop26. Our sold-out Peatlands Gathering event on October 7th, bringing together members of the peatlands community from varied areas of research and walks of life, was opened by Minister of State for Heritage & Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan, while Minister of State for Biodiversity & Land Use Pippa Hackett took part in our lively round table discussion hosted by Ella McSweeney. All recordings from the event are available to watch back here. You can also read all about it (and see a selection of pics from our in-person field trips to Irish bogs) in our Peatlands Gathering Conference Report.
INCASE Bioeconomy Week Map
Our INCASE project published a map in collaboration with Teagasc for Bioeconomy Ireland Week - the Irish bioeconomy is underpinned by our natural capital, the stocks of natural ecosystems, geosystems and atmospheric systems that support us. The interactive map looks at saltmarshes and estuary wildlife habitats, and in particular the unique Shannon estuary, home to a group of bottlenose dolphins. Learn more here.
NB: INCASE's Dr Catherine Farrell is speaking at the Uplands Forum EIP Workshop 'A Positive Future for Uplands Farming, Thursday, October 28th.
