Announcing the Business & Biodiversity Platform

Dear members,

Natural Capital Ireland is pleased to announce that we have begun working with the National Biodiversity Data Centre and Business in the Community Ireland to develop a new platform to support the private sector in taking action to combat the biodiversity crisis. The online hub will be vital for ensuring Irish businesses remain focused on the fact that biodiversity loss poses as big a risk to our economy and planet as climate change - and the two issues are closely interlinked.

Jointly backed by the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine and the National Parks & Wildlife Service / Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage, the initiative was launched last week with strong messages of support from Minister of State for Biodiversity & Land Use Pippa Hackett and Minister of State for Heritage & Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan - read our story below for full details. (Both Green Party ministers will also be taking part in our Peatlands Gathering event this October 7-9, more below.)

We are currently seeking to recruit a Platform Manager to develop and run the Business & Biodiversity Platform - read the job spec below and apply by October 7th.

Please keep an eye on our social media channels - Twitter & LinkedIn - .and our website for updates on this and other environmental and natural capital developments.

New Briefing for CEOs launched on Investing in a Nature-Positive Economy

"Today, we are facing intertwined crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, food security and social inequality. To solve any one of them, we need solutions that address all of them." So says a new CEO Briefing launched by Business for NatureWe Mean Business CoalitionWBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable DevelopmentWorld Economic Forum making the case for an integrated narrative and action agenda. Towards biosphere stewardship: A new study finds that without Earth’s complex web of terrestrial and marine ecosystems - known as the biosphere - we would already be seeing far more severe climate impacts than we are now. Using state-of-the-art modelling, Conservation International scientists simulated how ecosystems, such as mangroves and old-growth forests, absorb and store climate-warming carbon. They then demonstrated how global temperatures would have risen if humanity had gone through the Industrial Age with a biosphere that did not absorb carbon pollution. Results were stark. Read the paper here.
