JUNE 9, 2021
Precinct 301--The indefatigable Henry Carter and the ever-valiant
Elaine Brown on Election Day 2017, a brisk November morning.

Message from our Co-chairs
Joe and Elaine Freeland

Thanks to more than 56 Orange County Democratic volunteers for working at the polls to greet voters during the June 8 Primary. It’s important to spread the word about the robust and expanding community of Democrats in the county and share information about opportunities for participation.

We are grateful for the leadership of Precinct Operations Chair, Sandra Smith, who assembled materials for all precincts and who ensured volunteers were organized for 7 of the precincts. Thanks also to Jen Heinz for efficiently organizing Dems in the remaining 3 precincts including those in Lake of the Woods.

Most votes have been tallied. The message is clear that the following candidates will represent the Democratic Party on the November 2nd General Election ballot in Orange County:
  • Governor – Terry McAuliffe
  • Lieutenant Governor – Hala Ayala
  • Attorney General – Mark Herring
  • House of Delegates, District 30 – Annette Hyde (Unopposed in primary)

Over the course of the last 4 years, Virginia’s Democratic leadership has delivered historic results for families across the Commonwealth. The importance of the November 2nd election cannot be overstated. If we are going to keep Virginia blue and protect this progress, we must step up our game as community volunteers and activists.

Precinct in the Spotlight

State Senate Candidate Amy Laufer and Tracy Laughlin in 2019.
Ashe Laughlin on a very rainy
day at the polls in 2018.
Precinct 301 - Prospect Heights Middle School
in the Town of Orange

Ashe and Tracy Laughlin took over serving as Prospect Heights Middle School precinct (co-) captains from the Committee’s beloved Henry Carter who died in May 2019 at age 83. Volunteering for the first time in 2017, Tracy met Henry at the middle school at 5:30 a.m. to put up signs in the dark. Meanwhile, Elaine Brown, also arriving in the dark, took the first shift at the Democratic table before going to work as she does every year.
Tracy and Ashe always enjoy the day hanging out with so many loyal precinct volunteers introducing candidates, passing out sample ballots, and meeting friends and fellow Democrats from the community. It’s such a pleasure to come together to provide a friendly presence and source of information and fellowship at the Prospect Heights polling station.
In recent months, it was especially gratifying to receive a vaccine in the Prospect Heights cafeteria, the very same place we vote in every November. Entering the space transformed into a vaccination clinic and seeing first responders, health professionals, and volunteers all coming together to make the community safe was a moving illustration of the social contract for community well-being that is so central to our democratic ideals.
