ASG Elections Begin This Week!

Elections begin April 10-11. Spread the word.

By: Jesse Altillo, Staff Writer

Participation in ASG is at a low, with only 3 students listed as candidates for the 17 open positions this year. Additionally, the number of students voting is low. Only 218 students were reported to have voted with a campus of over 14,000 students last year. That's only 1.5% of the student population.

The ASG took a poll as to why the number is so low. Marciano Perez, dean of student affairs, reported that he believes not having a cafeteria played a big role into the unfavorable numbers. Thats where the forums for the elections were normally held in the past.

Most students are unaware of ASG, voting and the process to become a candidate. Students interested can establish if they are eligible at Student Affairs, which include a minimum of 100 signatures on a ballot and minimum GPA.

In recent elections, some positions had to be assigned because of the lack in participation. Perez wants more students to engage in elections and forums. In the future, Student Affairs and ASG wants to promote elections and participation by holding events that include how to run for office and how to vote.

In order to see more participation, student and teachers need to spread the word. Voting starts April 10 at 7:30 am til April 11 at 11:59 pm. Student Affairs located at M-200 opens at 8 am  and closes at 6 pm and can assist with any accommodations.

San Diego City College students and community members have the opportunity to have their taxes prepared and filed at the on-campus VITA Tax Center for free.

The IRS sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. City College became a certified VITA location last year. Now in their sophomore year, organizers are pleased with the results from the program.

VITA is designed to help low-medium income individuals file their taxes for free. Anyone who makes less than $54,000/year is eligible for the free service.
