Podcasting, Seriously Newsletter from LWC Studios
Curated and written by Kori Doran.

September 23, 2022

Starting this week, we will move to a bi-weekly cadence. Our next edition will be on 10/7.

Introducing Our New Editor, Kori Doran!

Hi all! Manuela here. I'm excited to introduce our new editor, Kori! She will be in your inbox every other Friday to bring you everything you love about this newsletter. As always, feel free to hit reply at any time and let us know what you want to see more of, and meet us on Twitter Spaces every other week as we get into all things podcasting.

Our Fall Series is Here!

In three new workshops we'll cover how to find your unique host voice, create a smooth conversational flow with remote recordings, and how strategic and product thinking can help your podcast go further.

As a podcast host, it can be difficult to find your unique style and become comfortable with your voice. Niala Boodhoo, host of Axios Today, joins us for the first webinar of the series to share insight and practical tips on how to develop your own ear, write scripts for yourself, and handle frustrations with your voice. This workshop will equip you with the skills to find and nurture your unique host voice.

Next, Florence Barrau-Adams, producer, audio engineer, and Pro Tools educator, returns to share best practices for working with remote recordings. This webinar will cover syncing tracks, multi-track edits, re-pacing overlapping comments due to internet lag, and more. You'll learn best practices, as well as Pro Tool tips and functions for creating smooth conversational flow.

We'll finish the series with Rekha Murthy, podcast consultant, LWC Studios Advisory Board member, and former user experience designer for web and mobile. In this session, she'll walk through some of the many ways that product thinking can help your podcast go further, be more effective, and thrive. She'll cover how to think of your podcast as a product at all stages: design, strategy, distribution, R&D, and cross-platform.

Registration is now open. Secure your spot for all three webinars at a reduced rate through 10/7.

Overheard on Podcasting, Seriously Live

This week we welcomed Casey Mendoza, journalist and entertainment reporter at Newsy, to talk about guest booking, finding the perfect expert, and highlighting voices that don't typically get to be heard. Some takeaways are:
  • When asking "Who can I bring in as my expert?" think outside the box. Consider voices from marginalized communities, up-and-coming talent, and early-career writers and academics. Stay connected with fanbases and communities online and on social media. "Fans are as much experts in a topic or piece of entertainment as academics and writers," she notes.
  • Put in the time. Casey spends several hours of her week searching for and reading things other journalists, writers, fans, and academics are writing about in entertainment and pop culture. She reaches out to folks who've written interesting pieces to introduce herself and connect.
  • Relationships can be collaborative instead of transactional. Each expert you book can be a relationship you build upon and grow.
