Overheard on Podcasting, Seriously Live
|
|
This week we welcomed Casey Mendoza, journalist and entertainment reporter at Newsy, to talk about guest booking, finding the perfect expert, and highlighting voices that don't typically get to be heard. Some takeaways are:
- When asking "Who can I bring in as my expert?" think outside the box. Consider voices from marginalized communities, up-and-coming talent, and early-career writers and academics. Stay connected with fanbases and communities online and on social media. "Fans are as much experts in a topic or piece of entertainment as academics and writers," she notes.
- Put in the time. Casey spends several hours of her week searching for and reading things other journalists, writers, fans, and academics are writing about in entertainment and pop culture. She reaches out to folks who've written interesting pieces to introduce herself and connect.
- Relationships can be collaborative instead of transactional. Each expert you book can be a relationship you build upon and grow.
