This week we welcomed Amy Westervelt, an award-winning journalist and host, producer of the climate change podcast Drilled, and the founder of production company Critical Frequency, to talk about fact-checking for podcasts. Some takeaways are:
- As Amy said, “If you’re not mildly annoyed by your fact checker, they’re not doing their job.” Attention to detail and a commitment to confirming all that you can is key, especially when talking about other people's lives. Amy shared an anecdote about a fact-checker who referenced the Farmer’s Almanac to confirm a certain date in history was indeed “a warm day.” Thoroughness is also important to avoid libel cases.
- When you're fact-checking, start by highlight anything that has a number and anything that's capitalized to verify you're covering important information like dates, figures, measurements, surnames, and institutional names.

Florence Barrau-Adams (she/her) has over 20 years of experience working in audio and video media, serving as producer, director, writer, host, editor, and production engineer on various productions at companies such as WNYC: New York Public Radio, Simon & Schuster, Weston Woods Studios, and Scholastic to name a few. Currently she is Senior Producer of Culturati: Conversations with Kierna Mayo produced by Breakbeat in partnership with PRX. As well as Producer of the 2020 Webby-Honoree, Citations Needed with Adam Johnson and Nima Shirazi. Florence is an AVID certified Pro Tools instructor and teaches audio production at NYU's Kanbar Institute of Film & Television.
