Entering the Teaching

(in a pandemic)
Dear <<First Name>>,

The UCSB Teacher Education Program recently caught up with some of our alumni who entered the teaching profession in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we're excited to share their stories. From changing expectations, struggles, and challenges, to where they find inspiration and hope, our alumni share their experiences from one of the most unprecedented years to begin teaching.
Miss Kira Wiman
6th Grade Teacher, Ladd Lane Elementary School
First Year Teaching Experience: All Remote

"I try new things in my classroom this year almost
every single day. If it works, I keep it and continue working with it. If it doesn't, I modify, I adapt, I get
my students' opinions on it, if needed. But I'm
always trying something new."

Ms. Paige Sleep

5th Grade Teacher, Marymount School
First Year Teaching Experience: In-Person
Ms. Sleep credits being honest with the students as
a part of Marymount's reentry success: “They know COVID and they’re hearing about it, so we told them these aren’t just normal, day-to-day, routines. If we
can’t stick to these protocols ... we could shut down.”

Ms. Amanda Barrett

2nd Grade Teacher, Peabody Charter School
First Year Teaching Experience: Remote to In-Person
Ms. Barrett isn’t ashamed to admit that she’s
nervous: things such as the new COVID procedures
and outdoor classes will make in-person teaching
look a lot different.  However, she’s looking forward
to the interactive activities she can do. “I use so
much that I learned at TEP all the time... I feel
really ready and on top of it."

Ms. Erin Walsh

English Teacher, Menlo-Atherton High School
First Year Teaching Experience: All Remote

Ms. Walsh has found incorporating Universal Design especially helpful for her instruction. “I try to think about my lessons in terms of being readily accessible
for all students ... For example, I'll include sentence frames on every slide or include structured graphic organizers or outlines in larger assignments."

Ms. Katie Elster

1st Grade Teacher, Peabody Charter School
First Year Teaching Experience: Remote to In-Person

Throughout all the changes and worry, Ms. Elster’s shining light has been her students. “The growth that
I have seen from the first day of school until now with the work they are turning in is mind blowing. It is
showing that there is learning happening, it just
looks a little different."

Special Addition!
Ms. Julianna Lopez

Current Teacher Candidate, Education Specialist Credential, Mild to Moderate Support Needs

Ms. Lopez's highlight has been student teaching. Even
in a remote setting, she has been able to be involved with many different aspects of being a special
education teacher. "It feels like what I'm doing with students isn't just a school assignment -- it's
purposeful and has meaning in the context of their
long-term learning goals."
