TROP ICSU at COP 24:
A Special Edition

 

We are happy to bring you TROP ICSU at COP24, a special edition of the TROP ICSU newsletter.

The TROP ICSU project was represented at four sessions on climate change education at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 24) in Katowice, Poland, on 13 and 14 December, 2018.

"COP24 is the informal name for the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The UNFCCC is a 'Rio Convention', one of three adopted at the 'Rio Earth Summit' in 1992. The UNFCCC entered into force on 21 March 1994. Today, it has near-universal membership. The countries that have ratified the Convention are called Parties to the Convention. Preventing “dangerous” human interference with the climate system is the ultimate aim of the UNFCCC. 

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme body of the UNFCCC Convention. It consists of the representatives of the Parties to the Convention. It holds its sessions every year. The COP takes decisions which are necessary to ensure the effective implementation of the provisions of the Convention and regularly reviews the implementation of these provisions."

COP 24 was held at Katowice, Poland, from 2 December to 14 December 2018. 


At COP24, December 13 was celebrated as Education Day. On this day, Dr. Rahul Chopra represented the TROP ICSU project at the session "Climate Education and Capacity Building for Students and Local Communities," organized by NFD Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE). He also participated in a panel discussion at the UN side event "Quality Education: Climate Change Education for All," organized by UNESCO, UNITAR, FAO, and UNDP.

On December 14, the TROP ICSU project was presented at the EU pavilion event "Climate Change Education and Training: Leadership and Excellence" and in a dedicated session at the IPCC WMO Pavilion.

The audience and participants at these sessions provided positive feedback on TROP ICSU and its educational resources, emphasizing and recognizing the urgent need for such an initiative. They also exhibited significant interest in collaborating and partnering with the project.

TROP ICSU at COP24

Climate Education and Capacity Building for Students and Local Communities

This session, organized by NFD Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), on Thursday, 13 December 2018, highlighted the role of education and capacity building in increasing climate literacy and in achieving climate targets.

The speakers at this event were Rahul Chopra (TROP ICSU), David Wilgenbus (OCE), Amir Delju (WMO),  Kartikeya Sarabhai (CEE), Kirtiman Awasthi (GIZ), and Adriana Valenzuela (UNFCCC). They shared their experiences in empowering local communities and students through climate education and capacity building.

Rahul Chopra presented "Climate Across the Curriculum: Integrating Climate and Science Education, Trans-disciplinary Research Oriented Pedagogy for Improving Climate Studies and Understanding (TROP ICSU)".


He provided an overview of the TROP ICSU project, its vision, and strategy. Further, he described the approach of teaching discipline-specific topics using climate-related examples. The talk also included examples of teaching resources (teaching tools and lesson plans) from the TROP ICSU website and a summary of the teachers workshops conducted so far. The project received positive feedback and garnered interest in the usage and dissemination of the TROP ICSU educational resources.
 

Quality Education: Climate Change Education for All

On Thursday, 13 December 2018 (18.00-19.30), the TROP ICSU project was represented in a panel discussion titled "Climate Change Education for All: Taking Everyone Along to Boost Sustainable Solutions at a Local Level" at a One UN Side Event. The discussion brought together "community leaders, mayors, scientists, youth activists and others to discuss how education can accelerate the implementation of the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level."

The panel comprised Mr. Raul Valdes Cotera (UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning), Ms. Melanie Harwood (Harwood Education, UK), Mr. David Wilgenbus (OCE), Ms. Tatyana Nemtsan (UNDP Climate Box project), Mr. Rahul Chopra (TROP ICSU), Ms. Karen Beattie (Project Luangwa), Ms. Genevieve Jiva (YOUNGO), and Mr. Frederic Ximeno (Barcelona's City Council).

In the panel discussion moderated by Mr. Angus Mackay (UNITAR), Rahul Chopra used the TROP ICSU project to answer, discuss, and elaborate on the following questions:·        
  • How can we increase awareness of climate change amongst high school and undergraduate students in classrooms across the world?
  • What educational resources can teachers of all disciplines in different parts of the world use to increase knowledge of climate change amongst their students?

Climate Change Education and Training: Leadership and Excellence

In this EU Pavilion event on Friday, 14 December 2018 (10.30-12.00), the focus was "Climate & Environmental Education: The India Story".

TROP ICSU was introduced as one of the examples to describe the state of climate, sustainability, and environmental education in India today. The project was also introduced as a means of democratizing knowledge through the digital. Rahul Chopra presented the objectives of the project and an overview of the educational resources.

Climate Across the Curriculum: Educational Resources for Teachers (TROP ICSU)

On Friday, 14 December 2018 (13.15-14.45), the TROP ICSU project was presented at the IPCC WMO pavilion in a talk titled,
"Climate Across The Curriculum: Educational Resources For Teachers
Trans-disciplinary Research Oriented Pedagogy for Improving Climate Studies and Understanding (TROP ICSU)".

In a one-and-a-half hour session dedicated to TROP ICSU, the details of the project and its educational resources were presented. The need to educate forthcoming generations about the causes and effects of global climate change was emphasized. Further, the use of digital platforms and techniques as a method to impart this education was introduced.

The talk showcased the TROP ICSU educational resources, which are free-to-download, curated teaching aids that integrate climate studies with curriculum in various disciplines and subjects.
