Climate Across the Curriculum:
TROP ICSU at COP 25

Marking a great end to the year 2019, the TROP ICSU project was represented at three sessions on climate education at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 25, held in Madrid from 2 December to 13 December 2019 under the Presidency of the Government of Chile and with logistical support from the Government of Spain.

On 10 December 2019, the TROP ICSU team made presentations on the project and its educational resources at two sessions on Climate Education: one was held at the IPCC-WMO pavilion and the other took place at the EU pavilion. On 13 December 2019, the TROP ICSU project was presented at the French pavilion.


In other significant news, the TROP ICSU portal and its educational resources have received recognition from UNESCO and have been featured in UNESCO’s November 2019 Newsletter on Education for Sustainable Development (in the “From our partners” section). 


The exciting first phase of the TROP ICSU project nears completion. In the three-year period 2017-2019, the TROP ICSU project team, in collaboration with its partners, has created and provided a suite of educational resources as a validated proof-of-concept of the idea of integrating climate change education across the curriculum globally.

In this phase, the TROP ICSU team has curated approximately 150 teaching tools and has created and published more than 70 detailed lesson plans that teachers at the high school and undergraduate levels across the world can use in their classrooms/laboratories to teach a topic in their discipline (Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Humanities) by using examples, case studies, and activities from climate science/climate change. The team has conducted 17 workshops for over 700 teachers and 4 workshops for about 50 climate experts in countries across the world. Two project websiteshttps://tropicsu.org and https://climatescienceteaching.org—have been created (the latter with a more user-friendly and visual interface). New partnerships and collaborations have been established with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), UN CC:Learn, and the YESS community. Three project-related manuscripts have been accepted for publication. 

We are grateful to our network of partners, collaborators, teachers, educators, and climate science experts for their unwavering support and important contribution in our journey so far.


To widen our reach and increase the adoption of the TROP ICSU educational resources, the team is now focusing on the addition of new educational resources and the translation of existing teaching tools and lesson plans. We are working with partners and collaborators to seek assistance in the translation of some TROP ICSU resources into other languages. We welcome contributions from our network of teachers, educators, climate science experts, and all collaborators in enhancing our suite of educational resources as we progress toward the next phase of the TROP ICSU project.


On the events front, a TROP ICSU lesson plan development workshop focusing on the Australian curriculum will be held at the AMOS 2020 conference in Fremantle, Western Australia on 14 February 2020. For details, see our Upcoming Events section.

TROP ICSU at COP 25 

The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 took place from 2 December to 13 December 2019, in Madrid, Spain. COP 25 was held under the Presidency of the Government of Chile and with logistical support from the Government of Spain.

"The conference will include the twenty-fifth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 25), the fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 15), and the second session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 2). The fifty-first sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 51) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 51) will take place 2 - 9 December 2019. 

The pre-sessional period is from 25 November - 1 December 2019.

The meeting will also showcase the wealth of climate action undertaken by non-Party Stakeholders and help galvanize the action of regions, cities, business, investors and civil society. TROP ICSU was invited to participate in 3 sessions on climate education at COP 25.

The first session took place on 10 December 2019 at the IPCC-WMO pavilion. The speakers included Apurva Barve (TROP ICSU), Pierre Léna (Office for Climate Education), Cliona Murphy (ALLEA Working Group on Science Education), Eric Guilyardi, and Lydie Lescarmontier (Office for Climate Education), and the session was moderated by Valerie Masson-Delmotte (IPCC).  Apurva Barve presented the idea of TROP ICSU (the integration of climate change education into core curriculum through relevant examples and activities), an overview of the project and its suite of educational resources, and the organization of these resources on the website. 

The second session was held on the evening of 10 December 2019 at the EU pavilion. Speakers included Apurva Barve (TROP ICSU), Pierre Léna (Office for Climate Education), Cliona Murphy (ALLEA Working Group on Science Education), Kira Vinke (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), Eric Guilyardi, Daniel Schaffer (Foundation for Environmental Education), and Lydie Lescarmontier (Office for Climate Education). They spoke about their initiatives in climate education and invited collaboration in these efforts. In this session, Apurva Barve presented the TROP ICSU initiative and its accomplishments, and invited collaboration in the dissemination, translation, and creation of new TROP ICSU educational resources.
 
On 13 December 2019, the TROP ICSU project was presented in a session at the French pavilion. Nathalie Fomproix provided an overview of the TROP ICSU project and its educational resources, and she along with Apurva Barve answered questions. Other speakers at this session were Pierre Léna and Lydie Lescarmontier from the Office for Climate Education.

Upcoming Events

 

A TROP ICSU Lesson Plan Development Workshop will be conducted at the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society's next national conference in Fremantle, Western Australia on 14 February 2020. This workshop is being convened by our collaborators at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, UNSW Sydney, University of Melbourne, and the Monash Climate Change Communication Hub. The main focus of the event will be the development of lesson plans for the Australian curriculum.
