"Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you 'you are wrong.' There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right.  To map out a course of action and follow it to the end requires some of the same courage which a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men to win them."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Awhile back I asked my swimmers this question:

"If you could change one rule in swimming, what would it be?"

The answers were as varied as the individuals -- some were pretty wild and others would actually be awesome to implement. Here is the list:
1. 20m underwater limit instead of 15m
2. 10m underwater limit instead of 15m
3. Breaststroke is illegal
4. 1-hand turns allowed in br and fly
5. Allowed to come off wall on stomach on backstroke
6. :30-second time-out allowed in a distance race
7. 1000 backstroke is an event
8. 800 IM is an event
9. Flip turns allowed in 100fly (but not 200fly)
10. Splits displayed underwater in distance free race
11. Relay starts allowed as soon as you are able to dive over your teammate
12. Relay starts are allowed to go earlier as long as they touch the wall before you hit the water
13. Coach allowed to tell you something during a race
14. Standardize the time between take your mark and beep
15. False start replay
16. No limit on how many breaststroke pullouts
17. No breaststroke pullouts allowed
18. Dolphin kicking in breaststroke allowed
19. Submerging on backstroke finish allowed
20. Choose your own IM event order
21. Stretch cord relays
22. Underwater kicking events -mono or regular fins
23. Fins allowed in any race

We need to immediately enact #10, #15, and #20.  #7, #8, and #9 could be particularly fun at some special meets. If you have any other good ideas, let's hear 'em!

"3 Things about Discipline:

1. Discipline is not punishment. It’s something that’s needed in order to produce better outcomes
2. You aren’t born with it. You choose to be disciplined.
3. Staying disciplined eventually opens doors, and provides you more opportunities and choices"

-Allistair McCaw
