“Coaching is teaching but it is also a creative process. I think sometimes we undervalue the creative process in coaching. For me that is what makes coaching really fun and fundamental. "
-Vern Gambetta
Being creative is one of the aspects of coaching I love most.  The ability to design a workout every day, to figure out how to squeeze a bit more speed out of a stroke, and to help swimmers craft their own performance are highly motivating for me.  Some days I make what feels like a masterpiece, and other days it feels like finger painting.
Coaching doesn't come with a map or instructions -- you have to figure it out for yourself and for your swimmers. I hope that this email and the blog inspire you to be creative.  You can certainly copy workouts verbatim if you want, but a far more powerful use would be for you to let an idea you read here get your creative juices flowing.   There is no one 'way,' just the path that you are on and a thousand roads you can take.

loosening up
swimming videos of the week

1. This week in Races You Need to See, Louise Hansson of USC goes 49.34 in the 100 fly. The efficiency of her dolphin kicks is particularly impressive.

2. FINA released the videos from their Golden Coaches series on Youtube this week.  Though I won't be going exclusively USRPT anytime soon, I was keen to watch Peter Andrew's lecture (below) and you can see the rest of them here.
