'Look, we've made it this far, we must be doing something right.'

When someone first said this in a workshop, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Was it cynical or optimistic? Wise or glib? Either way, it's come up so much since then that I've stopped waiting for someone to say it, it's my opening line!

Everyone has had times when they felt overwhelmed and spent, especially this year. But we've made it this far. Let's give ourselves and our teams credit for that. It's been a year of Lasting Leadership...

The Year of Lasting Leadership

The Lasting Leadership Guide launched in February. It couldn't have come at a better time.
Some great learning has emerged from our four Lasting Leadership workshops, like these highlights from Acosvo masterclasses (follow links for more than a dozen free resources!):
Sustainable leadership: Focusing on the key priorities; learning to let go.
Succession planning: Managing risk and developing leadership when 80% of organisations lack succession plans.
Lateral leadership and distributed authority:  Delegate more (during the pandemic, two thirds of managers have).
Read more about the year for Lasting Leadership here. You can also:
  • Review our year in numbers.
  • Sign up below to join the free pilot of our new e-learning course.
  • Talk to us about our Lasting Leadership workshops and in-house programmes.
With 800 hard copies of the Lasting Leadership guide, we definitely didn't see this year's events coming! But with the guide's focus on succession, staff empowerment and workplace equality, we're proud to have anticipated and responded to the key challenges of a tumultous year. Free e-learning pilot

Our second e-learning course, Introduction to Sustainable Leadership is ready! Now we need people to help test and improve it. Sign up for free, interactive leadership learning below. In return? Your honest, constructive feedback please!
Last time we piloted e-learning, it sold out in minutes. So be quick, but please only click the button below if you can commit to six hours learning and feedback during Feb-March.
Download more information and book your place on our next e-learning pilot: six hours flexible study between Feb-March 2020

Newsletter update

Thanks to everyone who ordered the 'Sun, Moon and Stars'! The limited edition of 50 disappeared *fast*, with such lovely feedback that we produced two extra editions to meet demand. How will you explore your time and space over the next few weeks?
'Really bowled over! It's so beautiful, simple and powerful...a sensory delight.'

Developing strategy - it walks on two feet

Henry Mintzberg famously said that strategy walks on two feet: 'One deliberate, the other emergent'. We've reminded managers and boards of this all year as they attempt to balance short-term survival with long-term sustainability.

Sustainable strategy needs everyone to understand and care about its success. So maybe it walks on 20, or 200, or 2000 feet! Read the full article here.

Working with funders

We're often asked if funders use and support the Lasting Difference toolkit. The short answer is - mostly! But it also depends where you work. Read more here and remember you can help by:
  • Sharing the toolkit with your funders and partners (the licence encourages non-commerical sharing).
  • Referencing it when you answer the question 'how will you sustain this work when the funding ends?'
  • Signing up for the Lasting Difference Symbol.
Of course, funders can do all these things too and we'd be delighted to support you. Contact Graeme to discuss your ideas, questions or examples.

You can (still!) book us

Since offering free 1:1 sessions to our 1400 newsletter subscribers, we've met some amazing people and helped some inspiring projects.
From a global research programme, to a UK arts charity, to a local advice service, we've loved it. For everyone who asked what's in it for us, there's your answer - though tweets and recommendations are always nice too 😉. So, we've committed to doing more in the New Year.

Just email Graeme to arrange a time, with a quick outline of what you'd like help with. Slots are super-limited so it's still first come, first served, as you'd expect.
