Picture This…  It’s winter in Utah. Snowflakes sift down through the pine and juniper and settle onto the vibrant cliffs standing sentinel on the Utah horizons, creating a glittering landscape of surreal white and deep rust-red crowned by clear skies of brilliant blue.  Cold winds redden the noses and bring smiles to the faces of eager hikers heading out on distant trails to experience the day.  You might be imagining this tableau and thinking to yourself, “Winter?  Why on Earth would I go hiking in Utah in the winter?”

Ahhh, so many reasons… but here are our top three:
1)     Winter cold is often far more enjoyable (and safer) than summer heat for desert hiking.
2)     If you’ve never experienced the photographic glory of white snow on red rock, there’s nothing like it in the world.
3)     If you’re still dreaming of exploring the famous Wave but are daunted by the lottery, the chances of winning a permit are a bit better now than they are during busier seasons.
So what are you waiting for?  Dive into our latest newsletter to catch a glimpse of all our doings, happenings, and ambitions for the upcoming season, and start planning a winter adventure with Dreamland.

Old Favorites. The weather may still be a bit chilly, but the new season is gearing up quickly, and we can’t wait to get out on the trail and visit all of our favorite stomping grounds as more and more activities get underway.  Whether you’re a single traveler looking to join an existing tour, or if you have a whole crew seeking out new adventures, we have an excursion to fit the bill.  Looking for a full-day jaunt without the hassle of competing for hard-to-get permits?  Check out the outlandish Martian landscape of White Pocket, our most popular day tour.  Or if you only have an afternoon to spare, avoid the crowds typical of larger venues like Antelope Canyon and head over to Peekaboo Slot Canyon to explore the secret twists and turns of this hidden desert gem.
And remember…  If tackling a remote cross-country backpacking expedition is on the top of your bucket list, Dreamland is now offering a fantastic new line of ambitious multi-day hiking adventures that brave the farthest reaches of the Grand Canyon and venture into the vastness of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.  We’ll take care of all the complex logistical details like camping gear, provisions, shuttles, hotels, and most importantly, backcountry permits.  We’ll even have tents and backpacks available for rental, so all you’ll need to do is plan ahead with a workout regimen to prepare for the rigors of the trail, and we’ll handle the rest.  See this link for some fantastic training ideas and routines to get started, and if one of these sounds like the trip of a lifetime, be sure to book early!  Space is extremely limited, and our 2023 trips are already filling up.

Looking for the perfect mix of backcountry bliss and small-town shenanigans?  Come on out to Kanab for the annual Balloons & Tunes Festival from February 17th - 19th and enjoy the fun as 40 hot air balloon pilots take to the Utah skies and adorn the airy reaches around the red-rock cliffs with a kaleidoscope of cheerful colors.  Our little town has a whole weekend of events and attractions planned, and the highlight will be the ever-popular “Balloon Glow,” when those same pilots will put all their balloons on display right down the middle of Center Street and shoot dragon-fire into the air in a spectacle to delight the entire crowd.  An eclectic vendor fair, a lantern launch, and a full-on “Battle of the Bands” will round out the event, and folks will come for miles around just to be part of the excitement.  Dreamland will be running our full range of tours throughout this iconic weekend, and we’d love to show you the best of the desert landscape and bring you back just in time to join in each evening’s festivities.  Tour availability and local lodging options both tend to book up quickly during Balloons & Tunes, so make reservations soon to guarantee your spot.

Community Partnerships. In addition to helping guests from around the world to “carpe” their “diem” and embrace the present moment, we always have one eye on the future of the guiding industry.  Through regular meetings and open communications with resources like the Kanab, Arizona Strip, and Grand Staircase-Escalante Field Offices, the Grand Staircase Regional Guide Association strives to provide the guiding community with an effective voice in the larger conversation surrounding the stewardship of America’s public lands.  Dreamland co-owner Paul Gagner plays a central role in this process as Vice Chair of the GSRGA and will soon be hosting a new meet-and-greet event for local guides and tour company owners to facilitate working relationships, share ideas, and find new ways of advocating for responsible land usage throughout southern Utah and northern Arizona.  We’ll be sure to keep you posted on new developments as the season progresses.
Parting words.
The lucky winners of our second annual Women’s Adventure Award contest will be joining us in February for a whole lineup of events, and several of last year’s winners have even jumped on the bandwagon and will return as alumnae to help welcome this year’s group.  We cannot wait to welcome TeddiJo Marie, Susan Mitchell, Ashley Bubnick, Rachel Bremer & Cathy Troyano to Kanab, and we’ve been absolutely floored by all the enthusiasm, experiences, and mutual friendships that have bloomed in connection with this event. We’d like to thank all of the amazing women whose catalyzing energy continues to make the Women’s Adventure Award possible.
Here’s to making new memories out on the trail!
