We hope your holidays were happy and 2019 is off to a good start! At PC Publican, we're starting the new year with a focus on better communication with our clients. This newsletter, which will arrive monthly, is part of that, as will be the occasional survey to help us assess our strengths and weaknesses.
Speeding Up A Slow Computer
A question I frequently get is "How can I speed up my computer?" A tune-up can certainly help, but the greatest value upgrade is often replacing an existing electro-mechanical hard drive with a solid-state drive (SSD). SSDs have no moving parts, and as such are much faster and more reliable. They have also come down in price dramatically in the last year. An SSD will greatly improve startup and shutdown times as well as the time needed to open your applications. A 500GB SSD upgrade now costs less than $150 (parts and labor).
Backups, Backups, Backups
I can't stress enough the importance of backing up your computer. Even if you don't think you have important data, if your hard drive crashes or is encrypted by ransomware you'll need a backup image of your system for recovery.
The most effective backup plans include both on-site (e.g. external hard drive or network attached storage) and off-site (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive) copies of data. Storage, both physical and cloud, is cheap. A 2TB external drive costs about $60, and good free backup software is available for both home and business use. Cloud services like Dropbox are less than $10/month, while Google Drive offers 200GB for $3/month. Both offer free tiers for limited storage.
PC Publican can help with all phases of backup setup: purchase, installation, configuration, and monitoring. Please call us to discuss the various options.
