SUN EATER NEWSLETTER

A VIRTUAL SIGNING, FREE STORIES . . . PLUS GOOD NEWS ABOUT BOOK 4

Before we get into ANYTHING else, I have a Zoom-based event coming up at 9 PM Eastern / 6 PM Pacific on Saturday, 10/10! My friend Jean-Paul Garnier of Space Cowboy Books out in California is putting together a live reading and Q&A event, which I hope some of you will join me for! Here's the link with the Zoom call info: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/reading-and-interview-with-christopher-ruocchio-tickets-122826105187

Jean-Paul is also the host of the Simultaneous Times podcast, the folks who performed my short story "The Duelist," and for whom I'm writing a second Sun Eater short, "Fire in the Sky," which will hopefully be out before too long (writing it is going to be next week's project, since it's taken a little longer to get through this bit of BOOK FOUR than I'd originally thought).

Long time readers of this newsletter will remember my SECRET PROJECT, which--while still a secret--I'm happy to inform you all is finally moving ahead again after 6-7 months of pandemic-induced freeze. Hopefully I'll be able to talk about it real soon. It's a small thing, but it IS the only non-Sun Eater thing I've written to date, and I think that makes it pretty exciting.

FROM THE AUTHOR'S DESK

I think I'm at last recovered from the year's ordeals. I've made pretty significant progress since the last newsletter (even had a few 2000+ word days). Here's the data:

BOOK FOUR:
Word Count: 172692 / 319000
Chapters: 42 / 80
Percent Complete: 52.5%

Since the last newsletter, I've written nearly 23K words (and gotten the project's daily average back up above 1500K words a day)! These last few chapters have all been real heavyweights, a couple coming in at nearly 8000 words apiece, and 2 had to even be broken up, stretching the total chapters from 78 to 80.

Don't let that 319K estimated final fool you. These giant chapters have radically inflated the final word count, and once I get through this section I expect it to drop by as much as 40K (which is about a month's work, to give you an idea of HOW inflated the total is). Currently estimating completion in December, which is way later than I'd like. I lost a lot of time this year to pandemic stressors and family medical trouble . . . and let's not forget the wedding! But at least for now the storm seems to have passed.

I plan to take 1-3 days out of the next week to write an original Sun Eater short (the aforementioned "Fire in the Sky"), so we can have another dramatic performance from Jean-Paul on the Simultaneous Times podcast!

Once "Fire in the Sky" and BOOK FOUR are complete, it'll be onto writing that Hadrian novelette "The Pits of Emesh" and finishing work on the first short story ebook collection, TALES OF THE SUN EATER, VOL. 1, which I'm getting the sense is probably going to be early 2021 and not late 2020 as I'd at first hoped.

Spotlight On

A Successful Kickstarter Book

SHAPERS OF WORLDS

A teenage girl finds something strange in the middle of the Canadian prairie. An exobiologist tries to liberate a giant alien enslaved on its homeworld by humans. The music of the spheres becomes literal for an Earth ship far from home. A superhero league interviews for new members. Strangers share a drink on a world where giant starships fall. A young woman finds unexpected allies as she tries to win a flying-machine race in steampunk London . . .

Ranging from boisterous to bleak, from humorous to harrowing, from action-filled to quiet and meditative; each of these stories is as unique as its creator. And yet, they all showcase one thing: the irrepressible need of human beings to create, to imagine, to tell stories.

To shape worlds.

Crispin's Solo Novel

THE LESSER DEVIL

Crispin Marlowe grew up in his brother’s shadow, but Hadrian is gone, and his grandmother—the duchess of Delos—is dying.

Answering her summons, Crispin takes off on what should be a routine flight to the ducal palace from the castle at Devil’s Rest. But he is flying into a trap.

With no one coming to save him and only his sister, Sabine, and a few injured guardsmen to protect him, House Marlowe’s least famous son must make his heroic stand.

I mentioned my short story, "The Duelist," above. You can now listen to the entire story for free on the Sun Eater YouTube channel (and don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already)! The story is performed as part of the Simultaneous Times podcast, and has been mirrored on my channel with their permission.

If you like highmatter sword fights, you'll like it. Plus it's free!
