2020 Issue #2

This is going to be a real short, quick newsletter. With the holidays over, most of my attention is on my wedding, which is coming up at the end of next month, so there's very little by way of book-related news at the moment. Once we get into March, things will really start to pick up with travel for conventions and so on (I'll definitely be at Raleigh GalaxyCon, Dragon Con, and World Fantasy Con this year), but until then things will be fairly calm.

On the other hand, I did recently appear in my longest video interview to date with fantasy author Nicholas Kotar. I'll put the link below. We talked a lot about Jungian archetypes and the religious symbolism in the Sun Eater books (Kotar is a Russian Orthdox deacon), as well as about Star Wars and J.R.R. Tolkien. Give it a watch/listen!

Including today, we have 175 days to go before the release of DEMON IN WHITE!

I've still got some revisions to complete, but I'm waiting for feedback from my editor, so I've gone ahead and tabled all my other Sun Eater projects (namely, that Valka spin-off lite novel, which will remain on hold for the time being), in order to turn all my attentions on BOOK FOUR. I've got about a 3000 word first draft of a plot synopsis together, which means it's about time to start outlining. (My outlines tend to run about 40 pages long. I treat them almost like very low resolution drafts, allowing me to flesh everything out in detail before I actually write the thing).

I'm feeling pretty good about it. It's got a lot of stuff in it I've been thinking about for years, but it's a heavy, dark book--darker even than HOWLING DARK--and I'm a little apprehensive to sink my teeth in. My plan is to have the outline finished by my wedding on 2/29, so I'll have a clean starting point when Jenna and I get back from our honeymoon.
I am trying to bring BOOK FOUR down to EMPIRE OF SILENCE size (it was 240K words, HOWLING DARK was 260, and DEMON IN WHITE is 300K), which should make the production cycle a little quicker! We'll see what happens.

Stay tuned in the meantime--there's plenty of short fiction content coming your way in the time between now and DEMON'S release! Expect a BOOK FOUR title reveal sometime in the coming months.

Spotlight On

My Short Story

In case you missed it, HOWLING DARK wasn't Hadrian's only adventure in 2019. I did a 3-chapter novelette called "The Demons of Arae" that's set between HOWLING DARK and DEMON IN WHITE which sends the Red Company out to find a lost legion.

It appeared in this anthology, PARALLEL WORLDS, edited by my friends LJ Hachmeister & RR Virdi.

PLUS it includes a Dresden Files story by the great Jim Butcher following the character of Goodman Grey, so if any of you are fans of that series and haven't checked this really should.

Justin T. Call's

I plugged this I think in 2018, but very foolishly did not realize it was only out in the UK at the time. But it's out in February and FOLKS, you don't want to sleep on this one.

If you like the biography element of the Sun Eater books, if you like the hero-but-dark-lord vibe of my work, you'll like this. It's kind of the epic fantasy version of the Sun Eater...and to cap it off, Justin is the coolest guy--and he's already finished book 2 and is well into writing book 3, so just like me, he won't leave you high and dry.

You have to preorder this one, it RIPS.
Photo Update

With very little going on, the only thing I have to share are these new business cards I had made. I felt like going the old Tarot card route was suitably dramatic--just the sort of thing a certain someone might do if he needed a business card.

I used, and I have to say I'm really impressed with the printing. Expect to see me with new Sun Eater promo cards on the convention circuit this year, too!
