2020 Issue #28

This is the big day, everyone! The final Sun Eater release of 2020 AD is out today. "Fire in the Sky" tells the story of the Cielcin invasion of Cordalos from the point of view of an Imperial peasant. Once again, the story was performed by my friend Jean-Paul Garnier as a part of his Simultaneous Times podcast, and is absolutely free to listen to.

The story isn't available in print yet (it will be included in a future collection), but if you haven't listened to Jean-Paul's performance of my other story, "The Duelist," you should check them both out. "The Duelist" is also available at my YouTube channel (link to that all the way at the bottom).

While this may be the last Sun Eater story of the year, the schedule for AD 2021 is shaping up, with the release of TALES OF THE SUN EATER, VOL. 1, WORLD BREAKERS, and SWORD & PLANET already scheduled (and word on BOOK FOUR soon to come). And who knows? Maybe the secret project will finally be unveiled (Covid put it on indefinite hiatus, but hope springs eternal)!

Speaking of BOOK FOUR, here's the latest update:
Word Count: 218889 / 300000
Chapters: 56 / 77
Percent Complete: 72.7%

Things have been a little less productive these last couple weeks. I lost a couple days to current events, as so many of us did--and what's more, I spent last weekend with my dad framing in the top floor of my house to build myself a proper office. Since my last newsletter, I've added a little over 10,000 words to the manuscript. Even better, I've not added any new chapters, and managed to notch the projected final count under 300K. Believe it or not, this is about where DEMON IN WHITE was at about this point in time, and revisions managed to gouge a good 13,000 words out of the book. I'm still hopeful I can bring this book in shorter than DEMON IN WHITE, though at this point achieving my goal of making it shorter than HOWLING DARK seems virtually impossible, which I guess is good news for those of you who like big books (and cannot lie).

It's looking like the book will be finished in early January at this point, which may make meeting the series's historic July release dates a bit tight. Don't panic yet . . . but there's a chance BOOK FOUR will be pushed back a few months. Should know more soon.

Once BOOK FOUR is done, I'll be pivoting to knock out "The Pits of Emesh" so I can TALES OF THE SUN EATER, VOL. 1 turned over to my copyeditor. I'll be targeting a Q1 2021 release for that, depending on said copyeditor and the cover design. Once "Pits" is written, it'll be onto my stories for WORLD BREAKERS and SWORD & PLANET.

It's good to be busy!

A Free Sun Eater Audio Story

In case you missed it from last time, my short story "The Duelist" is available to listen to for free at the Sun Eater YouTube channel!

"The Duelist" tells the brief story of two Imperial knights fighting for a lady's honor--a tale old as time! It was an excuse to show off the ways highmatter fencing isn't like fighting with metal swords, and an opportunity to hear my work performed by my friend Jean-Paul Garnier of the Simultaneous Times podcast (who kindly allowed me to mirror the story here.

Plus, if you haven't subscribed to the Sun Eater YouTube channel, now's your chance!
