We Have Fishing Poles Available!

Use your library card to borrow a fishing rod! Extra hooks and bobbers are provided with each rod. Never been fishing? No problem! Instructions on casting a fishing rod are included. Need bait? Worms can be purchased at bait shops and many gas stations. Poles may be loaned out for two weeks, but there are no renewals. Cuba patrons may place holds on the fishing rods, but they must be picked up at Cuba Library. Everyone over the age of 16 must possess a valid NYS Freshwater Fishing License. (Sold at most sporting goods stores, town/county clerks, DEC offices, over the phone 1-866-933-2257 or online by visiting www.dec.ny.gov.) The library also has additional resources available to borrow on the subject of fishing, and many additional books are available from other libraries throughout the system.

Program presented by Cuba Circulating Library in partnership with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Empire Passes Available to Borrow

The Cuba Library now has two Empire Parks Passes available for patrons to borrow. Passes may be borrowed for 1 week with no renewals. Cuba patrons may place holds on the passes, but they must be picked up at Cuba Library. The Empire Pass provides unlimited day-use vehicle entry to most facilities operated by New York State Parks and the State Dept. of Environmental Conservation including forests, beaches, trails and more. Instead of paying the vehicle use fee, simply present the pass and it waives the fee for day use entry. The list of NYS parks accepting the Empire pass can be found at https://parks.ny.gov/documents/admission/EmpirePassCardGuidelines.pdf
The list of DEC facilities can be found at https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9174.html

The Empire Pass does not guarantee parking when parks are at maximum capacity, or when special events occur. Passes do not include a waiver of camping, golf, museum, or historic site admission or other special activity fees. Passes do not cover public or private buses, shuttles, taxis, limousines, or other livery vehicles.

Be Red Cross Ready & Hands-Only CPR

Emergencies such as homes fires are becoming more frequent and can be devastating to our loved ones, homes, and communities. Build confidence by learning simple steps you can take to help prepare and protect your family from general emergencies and home fires. This program, taking place on Thursday, May 12 from 6 - 7:30 pm at the Cuba Library, is designed to help people understand, prepare for, and respond appropriately to emergencies.

Did you know, most people that survive a cardiac emergency are helped by a bystander? More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside a hospital each year. Learn how to deliver lifesaving CPR care without rescue breaths and be prepared. When you immediately provide Hands-Only CPR, you can increase the chance of survival.

Hosted by the American Red Cross, Be Red Cross Ready & Hands-Only CPR is a FREE preparedness education class taught by certified presenters. Patrons ages 13 & up are invited to sign up for this course. Please contact the Cuba Library with any questions or to register for the class.

This will also be an opportunity to rehome any extra house plants or garden seedlings you may have. The Cuba Library's heritage seed library will be available for participants to take seeds from as well. Please bring seeds & plants you have saved and are willing to share, labeled with information about the plant. This is planned as a monthly meet-up.

The Cuba Library will host a class on chair yoga on Tuesdays, May 3 & 17 from 11:00-11:45 am. The class will be lead by Jane Gram. Poses and movements are done sitting in a chair, or possibly standing using a chair for support. We will practice a variety of poses to strengthen muscles and bones and to support the spine. You will also learn how mindful breathing is key to moving in a safe, beneficial way. The class will be about 45 minutes in length. Please contact the library at cuba@stls.org or call (585)968-1668 to sign up.

The instructor for Chair Yoga, Jane Gram, is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, at the Experienced 500 level.
