MadCap Puppets: Legend of Sleepy Hollow

On Monday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m., Madcap Puppets presents “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at the Palmer Opera House in Cuba. This free show features the lanky schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, who can’t decide what’s worse in Sleepy Hollow, the headless horseman or the silliest of ghosts, the horseless headman. To complicate matters, Ichabod unwittingly vies with the local brute, Brom Bones, for the affections of Katrina Van Tassal. Ichabod endures a series of pranks and ghost stories, only to find himself on the ride of his life in this hilarious version of Washington Irving’s classic short story.

This show is free and open to all ages. Contact the Cuba Library with questions at or 585-968-1668.

This show is sponsored by the Cuba Circulating Library and is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the governor’s office and New York State Legislature and administered by the Tri-County Arts Council.

Cuba Library Flood Construction Update

We are almost finished with our repairs to the community room, and the children's storytime room is finished. In mid-September, the contractor replaced the remainder of the drywall in the community room and began the finish work. Last week, the community room was painted, and this week the flooring was installed. There are still some final details to complete, including updating the carpet on the stage to go with the new flooring. In the children’s room, the walls have been painted, and new laminate flooring was installed. As long as the room was being painted, we took the opportunity to give the shelves and some of the furniture a new coat of paint, and we chose some new wall decals, as well as a new rug.

Elevator Upgrades

Our elevator replacement project is complete. The doors have been replaced with new doors that open automatically when the elevator button is pressed if it is on that floor already, or when it arrives at the floor that you call it to. This new lift requires users to hold the button until the elevator arrives at the floor you are calling it to, and inside the lift you must hold the button for the floor you wish to go to until it reaches that floor. Director Tina made a video that has been posted to our Facebook page showing how to operate the new lift.

Register for Storytime at the Cuba Library

There is still space to register for storytimes for toddlers and preschoolers at the Cuba Library! Our Toddler University story time is for children who are 2 before October 1. It is held Thursdays from 10 - 10:45 AM. Caregiver(s) must attend with the child. Besides reading 2-3 books each week, there will be songs, movement, games, crafts, and playtime, introducing your child to the joys of books, reading, and learning.

Preschool University story time is for children who are already 3 or 4 years old at the beginning of the school year. It is held Tuesdays from 10 - 11 AM. Caregiver(s) must attend with the child. Besides reading 3 -4 books each week, there will be songs, movement, games, crafts, and playtime. This time helps acclimate your child to a classroom-like setting in a fun, flexible way. Both groups will have some STEAM activities incorporated throughout the year.

Due to caution surrounding COVID-19 and our county’s current risk level, we are reducing the class sizes and creating a waiting list for anyone who cannot be in the initial group. Please consider your ability to consistently attend as space is so limited for the time being. We will require masks for anyone over the age of two at these storytimes and social distancing will be encouraged.

Classes are tentatively set to begin the first week of October, but this is subject to change. To register, please contact the library at 585.968.1668.
