Corona Plague in Italy:
Special Update #2

Virus Log: March 14th, 2020

12 days since schools and museums closed
5 days working from home
3 days since commercial stores closed. Only supermarkets, pharmacies and Tabasco shops are allowed to open from 9:00-18:00

What is it like Living in Quarantine?

Staying at home. The quarantine has become harsh 2 days ago. It is now forbidden to leave the houses without a very good reason, like buying food or walking the dog. Even this should be done with the highest efficiency by walking to the nearest place, and returning home as fast as possible.
Maintain discipline. Police has fined people staying out of the house for no reason for a very high fee. After those incidences, no one confronted the rules again.
Keeping distance. In a country where kissing and hugging is quite common, this rule is quite a social disturbance. Food stores limit number of shoppers, and it causes waiting lines outside the shop. Surprisingly to me, the lines are still respectful.
Working from home. We are already 3 weeks with the disease spreading in Italy. Schools in Bologna are closed almost 2 weeks, and operate in online classes. Nothing is perfect, but people respond well and with understanding to the situation with no complaints.
Hygienic rules. For a somewhat "paranoid" living with a very clean person (some would say an OCD), it was not so hard for us to accept the "new" instructions of hygiene. Cleaning hands often, not touching the face, always thinking where the "germs" might stick to, etc. It requires having a lot of soap, hands cream, garbage bags, and comfortable gloves. Having kids and teenagers might be harder in that aspect of course. Here is a great practical article from the ministry of health of Israel.
April 3rd deadline. We were given a deadline to the quarantine. I believe this is key point to maintaining patience from the public. It is not easy of course, but  no one wants this situation to extend beyond that date. Giving a deadline is super important to give hope.

Who can save us?

In times where nobody knows how to behave and what will come next, we need to find a solid safe ground. Gamers have been playing simulated similar realities for 3 decades now. And this is why some people feel less stress than others.
WHY GAMERS SHOULD CONSULT GOVERNMENTS

Wonderful Surprises

Solidarity is Key To Maintain Discipline

Italy has spontaneously organized what they call FlashMob. At 12:00 sharp citizen went to their windows and applauded for the medical teams who work harder than normal, risking their lives to cure others.
Wonderful surprise to see such an event in a country that was caught by surprise.

Purim Scroll Online

The Bologna Jewish community decided to read the Purim scroll in a live online broadcast, instead of conducting the event as it was supposed to.

Keeping Sanity

On a personal note I can share that this situation reminds me feelings from the state of before the war I participated. One of my commanders told me once that "the only certain thing in a war is its uncertainty". Humans have hard time dealing with Unknown, Helplessness and Instability. This can drive people mad.

There is nothing I can say to calm you down, if you are stressed about the virus. But I can recommend you to build a routine and stick to it. The situation allows us that, and I can guarantee that It will help a little.

Keep the Moral, and your happiness level. Don't be afraid to go out. Just keep safe distance from people. Lock yourself if you are sick.

So what can you do?

Listen to News Once a Day. News have never helped for keeping the stability. Rumors will always run around. Find a trustworthy source of information, and stick to it.

Family Time. Watch movies on Netflix (or other similar services that already started providing free accounts for limited period). Play board games or other long group games. Check the article for recommended boardgames, like Pandemic and Virus.
