Newsletter Spotlight

Last year, Princeton ROTC celebrated 100 years of service at Princeton University and despite the obvious challenges this year, with the global pandemic, the Princeton ROTC program has continued to grow to over 70 students strong -- the largest the program has been since the 1990’s. We have welcomed roughly 20 incoming students into the program this academic year and, currently, there is a total of 49 Army, 15 Navy, and 8 Air Force cadets and midshipmen in the program as a whole.

This past spring, we were proud to host and observe the first ever virtual commissioning ceremony of 11 Princeton students who became commissioned officers in the Navy and Army. The ROTC program staff worked diligently to create a meaningful experience for students and their families and communities.

This fall, the Army ROTC program welcomed back to campus over half of its students for classes, physical training and labs. 33% of Army ROTC cadets have chosen to live on campus, 25% are commuting from within the Princeton vicinity and 42% have chosen to remain fully virtual. The Navy and Air Force programs, normally hosted at Rutgers University, have remained fully virtual this fall. All three programs continue to work jointly to support the overall student experience.

Our Princeton ROTC instructors have quickly adapted to providing both in-person and virtual classes, training and labs to ensure that our Princeton cadets are set up for success when they transition to military service upon graduation. As a safety precaution, both on-campus and commuting ROTC students and staff are participating in the weekly COVID-19 testing protocol process and are abiding by social distancing procedures during all training, labs and classes.

We thank the staff in Campus Life and all of the campus partners across the university for their support of the Princeton ROTC program and the success of our students. It is greatly appreciated.

RISE Students Share Racial Justice Learnings

To acknowledge the contributions and learnings of Princeton RISE students, five mini-symposia were held during the week of September 28. Each mini-symposium was led by Princeton RISE peer facilitators and included an overview of the Princeton RISE initiative, presentations of learning by Princeton RISE fellows, and time for questions. The symposia were attended by students, staff, faculty and campus and community partners who supported the students through this initiative.
