Your quarterly sector advocacy update

Hi All,
______

Welcome to our new quarterly newsletter – Advocacy Works.

At Volunteering Victoria, we take our responsibility for guiding advocacy for and by the volunteering sector very seriously. Advocacy can and does work and is an effective tool to success. Whether it's:

  • ensuring that volunteer screening checks are free
  • engaging government on behalf of volunteer centres
  • supporting centres to ensure ongoing effective place-based volunteer support
  • securing funding for the sector including grant funding for volunteer organisations

One of the most important roles of a state peak body is to speak out on behalf of its members for the sector it represents. Advocacy can mean the difference between a sector that flounders in the wilderness and one that is noted, valued and empowered to address the issues that impact it.

But for advocacy to be effective it must be informed by the sector and involve the sector. Our website and more specifically the “Current Priorities” page seeks to inform and invite your engagement. The Advocacy Works newsletter will:

  • update you on what Volunteering Victoria is doing in the advocacy space
  • keep you informed on our previous submissions and other advocacy efforts
  • get feedback from you on what we should be doing
  • give you an opportunity to engage with us on the matters that are important to your role, organisation or sector.

About the Advocacy SIG:
Volunteering is a key pillar to the Australian spirit, we as a country are never afraid to lend a helping hand when it is most needed – as demonstrated by such a robust volunteer community here in Victoria, as well as around the country. And while volunteering is always a needed and wanted service, there are avenues you can take to help accelerate and maximise precious volunteering hours.

Advocacy is one of these strategies, and in this session, Neil Pharaoh will discuss how you can better advocate for your organisation, as well as for the communities you serve. Learn exactly what advocacy is, how we can do it better, why we should be doing it.
