NHS Confederation (2021), Reaching the tipping point: Children and young people's mental health

The NHS Confederation published a report last month considering the 'impact the pandemic has had on children and young people’s mental health, the services that support them, and how local systems are working in new ways to confront the issues before them.'

The THRIVE Framework for system change was cited 'as a way to deliver integrated, person-centred and a needs-led approach to delivering mental health services for children and young people' that has been implemented across many systems.

Partnership working is a key principle of the THRIVE Framework and implementing the framework supports effective cross-sector working, with shared responsibility, accountability and mutual respect between agencies. Read the report here and the Tavistock and Portman communications related to it here.

How can services be improved to effectively address the mental health of vulnerable children and young people?

This journal article describes how a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) redesign in the London Borough of Camden between 2016-2018 was accomplished to improve the level of access to CAMHS for vulnerable groups and the quality and effectiveness of services for children, young people and their families. The model of service delivery is underpinned by the THRIVE Framework for system change which builds on the resilience of families and the skills of the workers who have the closest relationships with them. Save the date: i-THRIVE Grids: Developing a shared decision making tool for Integrated Care Systems Workshop
Date: Thursday 11th November
Time: 2 - 4pm

Based on feedback from the National i-THRIVE Community of Practice where the current titles of the i-THRIVE Grids no longer feel a helpful distinction given the move to Integrated Care Systems, we took the grids to a young people’s feedback forum and young people gave their suggestions. We would welcome your feedback or suggestions on what may be a more helpful and accurate descriptor. Please complete our brief poll here.

Contact us if you would like to showcase how your locality has implemented the i-THRIVE Grids. The team will provide coaching and practical support to build confidence and skill for anyone willing to share their learning.

Call out for future National i-THRIVE Community of Practice presenters

We want to increase opportunities for shared learning from the diverse communities across the country that are implementing the THRIVE Framework. In addition, we would like the diversity to be reflected in our presenters at webinars and face to face events to actively promote and encourage diverse perspectives. The team will provide coaching and practical support to build confidence and skill for anyone willing to share their learning.

Feedback from a number of presenters have been that the National i-THRIVE Community of Practice events have been a friendly introduction to presenting on a national scale for which we can provide a certificate to validate the contribution.

Please do contact us at ithriveinfo@tavi-port.nhs.uk if you would like to think about how to take this forward.

If you have any queries about implementing the THRIVE Framework for system change (Wolpert et al., 2019), please contact the team at ithriveinfo@tavi-port.nhs.uk. We will endeavour to help in any way we can.

With warm wishes,
