Heyla!

This update is going to be SUPER short...just kidding, April Fool's! My newsletters are rarely short. *laughs*

The year is 25% over. How crazy is that, hmm? It's been more than a year and I'm still working from home. I'd like to stay working from home, to be honest. I never realized how much I hate the rat-race commute. Not to mention I'm more productive AND I'm exercising 5 days a week after I log off for the day. All good habits that I hope to continue, friends!

So my writing group chose flash fiction as the topic for their March meetup. (Relax, it's via Zoom) I don't really know how to write short stories so I took the opportunity to practice. If you're reading this, you've probably peeked inside one or two of my books. I'm a world-builder. That stuff doesn't happen in "1000 words or less." Anyway, I failed my first attempt by writing 1300 words. But I liked Who Says Potions Can’t Be Delicious? so much, I posted it on AO3. The same week I was rushing to write that story, I also received a message inviting me to enter the Queer Sci Fi flash fiction contest. (2021 theme is "Ink") I read the rules and nearly keyboard smashed. Three hundred words MAX?? Impossible!! I was only just learning to really write short fiction.

Anyway, once I finished the 1300 word short story, I circled back to the Queer Sci Fi thing. Needless to say, 298 words later, I submitted my flashfic, Power, to their contest. LOL. If chosen, it will be included in the next anthology.

Remember Me, Synthetica wasn't popular enough to hit the final round for the Ann Bannon Popular Choice Award, but it did make it to the final round for the Tee Corinne Award for Outstanding Cover Art. It was a beautiful piece, and Ann McMan really brought my book to life with the cover art for this one. It's my favorite to date. Click on the cover for the Amazon link.

Shooting the Shit Podcast with KD Williamson
You know her, you love her, and she's hilarious. KD was my very first Author Astronaut of the Month, back when I started featuring other writers. She's the author of Big Girl Pill, Pink, and the popular, Cops and Docs series. As for the podcast...honestly, I don't even know how this happened. One second, she's talking about it online, the next thing I know I'm her sidekick. At least we'll never run out of material to talk about. Fanfic, WTF News, medical indignities, and much, much, more! The podcasts can be found on all the usual platforms, accessed via Linktree. As a bonus, the video of our recorded sessions will also be posted on our Shooting The Sh*t Podcast YouTube channel. Click the image below to watch our very first podcast. The next episode we'll talk about a popular taboo trope in fanfic. And in the 3rd episode, we'll have our very first guest stars, with Rae D. Magdon and Virginia Black. We're going to talk about fanfic and how it relates to published fiction.

GCLS Member Spotlight
I had the privilege and honor to be the March featured member for the GCLS Member Spotlight. I wanted to do something a little different for this blog post so rather than the usual "this is all about my writing" I decided to give folks a little glimpse inside my pre-novel writing brain. I was a poet long before I conceived of a story, practically my entire life. I hope you enjoy.

Author Spotlight
You want to know who is a cool cat in writer town? Kate Gavin! She is our Author Astronaut of the Month for April. Kate is a native Midwesterner, currently living in Ohio. When not staring at a computer screen for her day job, or this writing gig, she spends her time retrieving items from her thieving dog, playing video games, and bingeing TV shows with her wife.

Eight Great Angsty Lesbian Romance Books - Burn It Down

Writing Updates:

  • With Elemental Attraction finished, I've been slowly chugging along on The Rebels of Psiere. That's the 3rd and final book in the Mystery of the Makers trilogy. The reason it's going so slow is because of my new fascination with flash fiction. (the really short stuff) I'm officially up to 13,000 words, which is a little over two chapters.
  • I spent some time working on a few other shorts, contemplating adding more fics to my Adventures of an Awkward Scientere series, and doing a little work on my dark YA idea.
  • Chosen of Artemis: Chapter One sample on my website.

⬇️NEWLY REVAMPED BLURB⬇️

Elemental Attraction
Two people find themselves in a quandary. Aderri—a powerful dragon shifter with some light defensive magic and Ellys—a half-elven swordswoman for hire, one of the best across the six nations.
When Aderri gets news that she must come home for the naming ceremony of a new hatchling, she's forced to hire Ellys and her telepathic steed, Roccotári, to see her safely there. Of course, things are never simple as they seem. Not only do they have to traverse the land between two kingdoms on the brink of war, but Aderri's Clan expects her to return with a romantic interest. So, for the added promise of triple Ellys' normal fee, the half-elf agrees to pretend to be Aderri's suitor.
Ellys and Aderri have to convince a Clan full of magical mixed-shifters for a week that creatures of differing elements can burn with the flames of love, without actually lying. A situation made even more difficult by a matchmaking mare, steamy baths, and an innkeeper with mischief on the mind.
Caught between the weight of the past and expectations of the future, they must find their true destiny within the heat of fire.

Publishing Updates:

  • Elemental Attraction is sitting tidy with my editor for the first pass. Right now, we are shooting for a September 1, 2021 release date. It will be my first book under the Flashpoint Publications label and I'm excited.
  • I'm also excited that May Dawney is creating the cover for Elemental Attraction. Her speculative fiction work is top notch, and garners a lot of chatter on the cool social media pages. If you're an author, check out her portfolio. Her prices are really reasonable for the quality you receive.
  • Do you need reading material but don't have a big budget right now? Don't forget, all my short stories, as well as my short and long fan fiction can be found FREE on AO3.

[START AUTHOR TRANSMISSION]

Name: Kate Gavin
Publisher: Bella Books
Reason you started writing: Started writing for a queer studies class and we had to examine an aspect of the LGBTQ+ community using different mediums. I chose a novella and that eventually became my first book, Full of Promise.
Next book to release & when: Table for Two published on March 18, 2021
Why we should read it: You should read this to get a twist on the “only one bed” trope. In this case, there’s only one table. There’s a dash of a thawing ice queen with a sprinkle of enemies to lovers. Plus, add some great friendships and adorable (and sometimes embarrassing) banter between a mother and daughter.
K. Aten notes: Only one bed/only one table trope IS an excellent one that I've read in fanfic many times.
Genres that you've written: YA Romance, Contemporary Adult Romance.
List of published books:

  • Full of Promise
  • Table for Two
  • Save the Date - Bella Books romantic anthology coming in June, 2021

Name something you're proud of in regards to your writing: I’m pretty proud of the relationships I create in my books, and not just romantic ones. I think I’ve built great relationships between an MC and a parent or an MC and a friend.

Cats or Dogs: Dogs. 🐕
Coffee/Tea/Water:
Coffee, but since I’m trying to cut back I guess I should say water…
K. Aten notes: You shouldn't have to cut back during a pandemic, just saying.
Weapon of choice during Zombie Apocalypse: Shotgun or the weapon Charlize Theron wields in The Old Guard. K. Aten notes: The Old Guard *swoons* Charlize Theron with short dark hair, and black tank top, and wielding a big-ass ax? Oh yes! Great choice there and I'm here all day for a sequel!
Hobbies: Video games, puzzles, walks with my wife, crocheting.
Do you fanfic? If so, favorite ship: Read it, but don’t write it – fave ship is Kara/Lena.
K. Aten notes: I'm starting to wonder about all these folks saying Supercorp. Are they trying to win me over, or is the ship as awesome and full of chemistry as I assume? Hmm... 🥰

Table for Two by Kate Gavin

Trying to take a few brief moments away from a stressful situation, Reagan Murphy snags the last table at a bustling downtown lunch spot. When another woman walks into the crowded restaurant seeking a table, Reagan offers to share hers.
Jillian Jacobs just wanted a quick bite before she’d have to focus on a new and unreasonable deadline. Irritated by her empty stomach and by the prospect of waiting, Jillian resentfully accepts a seat at a stranger’s table.
Their shared lunch is filled with hostility, snide comments, and shades of derision from Jill and Reagan finds herself relieved at the end of the encounter.
But then the two are thrown back together when Jill becomes a catering client of Reagan’s. Soon navigating a professional relationship becomes complicated as their attraction begins to smolder. Will it get in the way and cause even bigger problems? Or will this be the start of something they’ve both been looking for all along?
