I'm fully vaccinated, finally! I feel very lucky and certainly a lot less scared. I'm still masking, disinfecting, and everything Iv'e been doing for the past 14 months, but I can breath a little easier. Oh, and check this out! The indomitable May Dawney came through for us on the cover and isn't it perfect? You can pre-order now for the September 1st release. Click the picture to see the Amazon page.
Hey, it's award season. If you read WLW fiction, you probably already know this. The Golden Crown Literary Society made their finalist announcements and I've had two books make it through to the next round. The first announced was Remember Me, Synthetica and it's a finalist for the Tee Corinne Award for Outstanding Cover Art. Major thanks to Ann McMan there! My other book to make it to the finalist round was The Lost Temple of Psiere, which is book 2 in the Mystery of the Makers series. That one is a finalist in the Science-Fiction/Fantasy category. Wish me luck!
Besides my novel, another Flashpoint Publications author also made finalist in the Mystery/Thriller/Crime category. Take a moment and check out Tammy Bird's novel, The Book of Promises.
And because Lost Temple is a genre finalist, I'll be taking part in the brand new GCLS Finalist Author Spotlight. I'll be reading from The Lost Temple of Psiere on May 8th. Our Zoom session begins at 11:00 AM Eastern. Click the image below to register.
Which finalists you'll hear during my session:
Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health, edited by Adrian Shanker, published by PM Press
The Lost Temple of Psiere, written by K. Aten, published by Regal Crest Enterprises
The Sea Within, written by Missouri Vaun, published by Bold Strokes Books
YOUNG ADULT/DEBUT NOVEL:
The Year Shakespeare Ruined My Life, written by Dani Jansen, published by Second Story Press
CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE: MID-LENGTH NOVELS:
Twice Shy, written by Aurora Rey, published by Bold Strokes Books
Besides the Finalist Author Spotlight, I'll also be participating in a regular Author Spotlight, I'll be moderating a different Author Spotlight, and I'll be on the Trends in Fanfic panel. Some of the times are still being hammered out so watch upcoming newsletters for more details, or check the GCLS website List of Events. All the Goldie Finalist Author Spotlight reading times are posted already so you can sign up to hear some talented authors! I'm getting excited for the GCLS 2021 Con, how about you?
Also, as if I'm not busy enough with my full-time (bill paying) job, being a writer, working as the Social Media Manager for Flashpoint Publications, I've volunteered for the GCLS Marketing/Social Media committee. You can read all about the other hard working individuals HERE.
If you like author readings, you should check out the Flashpoint Publications YouTube channel. Not only are we adding links to our authors' content to our playlists, but we are also uploading original content.

It's May, springtime, and we've got a brand new author in the spotlight. Celeste Castro is our Author Astronaut of the Month. Celeste, she/her, is an American Mexican, Own Voices author from small-town, rural Idaho, where most of her stories take place. She grew up with learning disabilities, though she always kept a journal. In addition to fiction, she is a staff writer with Hispanecdotes, an online magazine for Latinx writers, where she publishes essays and poetry.

- I'm about 20,000 words into The Rebels of Psiere. I've had to take a temporary break while I do my edit pass but I'll be back at it again within another day or two. My original goal was to have this finished by the end of June but it doesn't look like that's going to happen as life keeps getting busier and busier.
- If you're interested in the short fiction I wrote, you can always check it out on my AO3 site (see the link below). I post my short stuff there for free for anyone interested.
- You can still read all of Chapter One from Elemental Attraction on my website. Check it out, see if you'll like it, then pre-order on Amazon. Easy peasy, right? My goal has always been to make people #Think, #Feel, and # Discuss with my books. But with this one I want to make you #Laugh. We need more of that in the world.
- My editor and I have each completed one full edit pass. Normally we go 3 rounds each before sending it off to the 2nd editor, but I have a feeling this one will move on sooner than that. It's clean enough that I did my listen through already. (Yes, I simultaneously listen and read the manuscript to really find all those troublesome parts)
- As you saw above, we got the cover for Elemental Attraction from May Dawney. She really captured the humor and character personalities with this one. I couldn't think of a better cover to go with my first novel with Flashpoint Publications, and thirteenth novel overall.
- Do you need reading material but don't have a big budget right now? Don't forget, all my short stories, as well as my short and long fan fiction can be found FREE on AO3.

Name: Celeste Castro
Publisher: Interlude Press
Reason you started writing: I never saw myself in stories growing up. When I first started reading romances years later, nothing had changed. People like me existed in the periphery. I wanted to see women who looked like me, with experiences like my own, front and centered in lesbian-themed fiction. I am proud to be contributing to this body of work through writing and in through my activism.
Next book to release & when: Prize Money, May 11, 2021
Why we should read it: Prize Money, is an own voices, small-town rodeo romance about a champion barrel racer and rodeo queen who strikes up a friendship with a former Hollywood stuntwoman turned bullfighter. My story touches on many themes, from reinvention and redemption to breaking down barriers that exist in the macho, male-dominated sport of rodeo. Through my story I wanted to address the lack of diversity and representation in the sport and help shatter the myth of the American rodeo by helping reclaim the narrative and pay tribute to the Hispanic influences on the history of the rodeo. K. Aten notes: What a fantastic idea!
Genres that you've written: Romance, paranormal, fantasy, penny dreadful & crypto fiction. K. Aten notes: I did the legwork so you didn't have to! And now I know what it is too! Super cool. => Cryptofiction is fiction based on cryptozoology. Cryptofiction combines elements of native legend, historical records and eyewitness accounts concerning a mythical or legendary creature such as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster or any creature studied by cryptozoologists.
Examples: Works by Jules Verne ( The Mysterious Island), Arthur Conan Doyle ( The Lost World), and Edgar Rice Burroughs ( The Land That Time Forgot), and recent fiction such as Michael Crichton ( Jurassic Park) and Steve Alten (the Meg series and The Loch).
List of published books:
- Lex Files
- The Taking
- Save The Date
- Our Words: Queer Stories from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Writers
- Prize Money
Name something you're proud of in regards to your writing: I am proud of the advocacy work that I’m doing to help elevate marginalized writers. I wrote a blog post about a mentorship experience I shared with another writer over this past summer. Even though I am still learning I hope to always make time for others and share what I know.

Cats or Dogs: Cats! 🐈🐱
Coffee/Tea/Water: Coffee! ☕
Weapon of choice during Zombie Apocalypse: Something long and pointy! K. Aten notes: That seems like a given but I'm totally here for it!
Hobbies: Running, gardening, cooking, and records. 🏃♀️🌾👩🍳🎶
Do you fanfic? If so, favorite ship: Lesbian X-files, with Scully K. Aten notes: Fun fact, I attempted an X-Files fanfic back in the day where Scully gets a new partner. I never finished it, but maybe I should have, hmm?
Prize Money by Celeste Castro
Eva Angeles is a professional barrel racer headed for her third world title when a competition mishap throws her in the path of an on-the-loose bull. She is saved from impending disaster by a tall, dark, and handsome bullfighter—a woman. Toma Rozene is an equestrian stuntwoman fresh off the set of a blockbuster film when a family emergency calls her home to help run the family business: rescuing fallen rodeo riders before blustering bulls and bucking broncos trample their dreams. Eva and Toma's shared passions and competitive spirits make friendship easy, but, as their feelings deepen, they must decide if the divergent futures they seek will stand in the way of love.
