A Note from our Director

If you are like me, spring is so welcomed along with the new beginnings it brings.  As I look back on the last 13 months of a worldwide pandemic, I am thinking of the words I would choose to describe how this impacted Chelan Valley Hope, our Team, our families, our residents, and those most vulnerable in our community. Looking back, and equally important looking forward, I would describe this as a season of unexpected change, innovation, and an endless supply of hope and support. We are a success story to share with you.

As COVID-19 began last March we all faced the unknown as we moved into a year of adapting to a new way of living life and conducting business as we knew it. Through all of the unknowns we took steps together to keep the Chelan Valley Hope Team and clients safe and whole. We created virtual business methods to serve the individuals and families who needed it most, all without interruption to our normal business hours. We are not alone in our success story, but are one of countless beautiful and encouraging stories internationally. Those stories are what a dear friend once aptly dubbed “coffee and cheesecake conversations”.  In other words, it matters to take time to listen and talk. The entire Team and I are grateful for all of the support extended to us and our clients throughout this challenging season.

As a 501(c)(3) grass-roots faith based and secular organization formed in 2009, Chelan Valley Hope began as a ‘coffee and cheesecake conversation’ amongst local church leaders to create a centralized support system to those in need right here in the Chelan Valley. This was a collaborative approach to bring relevant resources to those who needed them-- whether rent assistance, utility assistance, fuel cards, phone cards, fire relief support, emergency shelter, food and non-food support, homeless prevention, eviction prevention, educational life skills, immigration resources, and so much more.

As the Executive Director it’s a privilege to serve with this amazing and talented team of 20 Volunteers, an 11-member Board of Directors, and 2 part time staff.  This, our 11th year of serving others at Chelan Valley Hope, is to the credit of this Team (past and present) and the local individuals, businesses and organizations that support our mission and vision of ‘furthering positive change in people’s lives’.

As we move into the remainder of 2021 we are excited to enhance and build upon established services and programs. Our connectivity project in 2021 will help us realize our vision of assuring clients are connected with Wi-Fi, cell phones, cell minutes and more. We are also focused on developing client outreach by working collaboratively with our local agricultural industry, businesses, non-profit partners, colleges, schools, skill source, employment agencies, and city and district representatives.

Enjoy a wonderful spring my friends,

Jean Gambrielle

Jessica KeelerVolunteer/Staff Spotlight

Jessica (Jess) Keeler, an “aspiring” mental health professional, has graced CVH with her sunny disposition for almost a year. Starting as a volunteer in August, 2020, Jess was promoted to a part-time position as Administrative Assistant in January, 2021. Jess brings a bundle of talents to her job, as maven of social media, graphic designer, and creative genius. Jess’s designs have beautified all of our recent public communications, and her social media posts have allowed CVH to reach a broader audience with regular, timely, and clever messaging. We have been so blessed to have Jess’s skill sets to complement and enhance our communications with the community.

But Jess isn’t only about creative accomplishments. Her heart for CVH’s work is enormous. With a strong personal value around “active listening,” Jess makes CVH’s clients feel welcome and heard. In many instances, Jess is the first person CVH clients encounter when they call or visit. Her professional and kind presence smooths the way for clients who frequently feel embarrassed or anxious by being placed in a position to have to ask for help. Jess is always armed with a ready smile that puts everyone around her, whether clients or team members, at ease.

Jess shares that her experience at CVH has reinforced her decision to enter the mental health field serving underserved communities. A graduate of California State University with a B.A. in Psychology, and armed with an A.A. in Psychology from College of the Desert, Jess was recently accepted to Pacific Lutheran University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program. While  she will be leaving CVH in August to continue her studies, Jess has promised to return to Chelan after completing her schooling. Having grown up in a military family, Jess laments that she has never had the opportunity to put down “roots.” Her experience in our community has inspired her to commit to settling down in Chelan when she completes her graduate degree. Jess feels that she has become part of the fabric of the community through her tenure at CVH, which has allowed her to interact with our donor base as well as our clients, giving her a unique perspective on our entire community.

To those interested in pursuing a volunteer opportunity with CVH, Jess shares that the atmosphere is friendly, open, encouraging, and supportive. The word that best describes her experience at CVH is “joyful.” She credits Executive Director Jean Gambrielle with creating an environment that has allowed her to thrive and expand her creative reach. While the team is sad to see Jess depart, we look forward to her return and cheer her on her career path—one for which she is uniquely suited.  We are confident Jess will return with her big heart for service and additional skills equipping her to bring positive change to many lives in our Valley.

Client Testimonial

I came to Chelan in the beginning of February 2021 as a single mother, recovering from homelessness and was suddenly the sole provider for my son. Every day was a struggle without a home to call our own and relying on family to have a consistent place to stay. I struggled to provide basic necessities like clothes and healthy food for my child. I contacted several community resource offices to no avail before I got ahold of Ryan at Chelan Valley Hope. I not only found assistance but also compassion and understanding, people who cared about my situation and offered more than I thought I had a right to ask for. Going so far as to provide deposits and rental assistance to help me get into my own home. This put me in a position to find success for myself and my son. Asking for help was hard, but the wonderful staff at Chelan Valley Hope has reaffirmed to me that there is in fact hope to be had. My only advice to others is not be afraid to reach out and ask for help, you will find open arms waiting for you.
