Virtual Learning: Events for Monday, March 16th

Authors, illustrators, scientists, and others are stepping in as students around the world face school closures. Each day, I'm sharing a newsletter with a list of live-streams for students, as well as other resources. Please feel free to share this list with other educators and families. They can sign up to receive the list in their inboxes by clicking here.

The knowledge that many students are unable to view these resources due to inequity of access is heavy on my heart. Each day, I'll also feature one organization working to support the basic needs of children during these unprecedented times. Today's organization is First Book. First Book is working to deliver 6 million books to students who wouldn't have them otherwise, as well as provide children with basic hygiene supplies. You can support the organization's work by donating here.

Today's Virtual Learning Events
1 p.m. EDT: Daily Notebooking Videos with Poet Amy Ludwig VanDerwater

Poet Amy Ludwig VanDerwater (author of Read, Read, Read! and Write, Write, Write!, as well as hundreds of poems on The Poem Farm) will be sharing daily notebooking videos on her Sharing Our Notebooks website and should be available by 1 p.m. EDT each day.

p.m. EDT: Skype a Scientist: Animal Communication with Angela Freeman

Angela Freeman is a scientist who studies how animals communicate. Right now, she works with giant rats that can sniff out explosives – but she works to understand how they tell each other they are ready to mate. How do giant rats find love? For more information, visit the Skype a Scientist web page.

p.m. EDT: Draw Every Day with Jarrett J. Krosoczka

Every weekday at 2 p.m., Jarrett J. Krosoczka (author & illustrator of graphic novels Hey Kiddo and Star Wars: Jedi Academy) will be holding live webcasts on his Youtube channel. As Jarrett shared on Twitter, “If you can’t watch live, each art lesson will be archived. Get your kids creating, drawing, using your imagination. We will get through this together.”

2 p.m. EDT: Conversations with Oliver Jeffers

Every day, Oliver Jeffers will be reading aloud one of his books and talking a little about what went into the making of the story. At this time, it seems like Oliver Jeffers will be streaming these events on his Instagram.

3 p.m. EDT: Read Aloud with Mac Barnett

Each day at 3 p.m. EDT, Mac Barnett will be reading one of his books aloud on Instagram Live. You can find the videos on his Instagram page by visiting @macbarnett. Videos will remain up on his page for 24 hours.
