Q: Even though my 8 year old son has autism and cannot speak, I can usually can tell what he wants or needs. I try hard to give it to him quickly, otherwise he gets very upset. His tantrums are getting worse and now he is bigger so I can’t control him like I used to. There are times I have no idea why he is so upset. What should I do?

A: When a child cannot speak, most parents do a great job of anticipating the child’s every need from a young age. They get to know every cry, every look, and every situation and what it means.   LIFEPlan Member Supports Golisano Upstate Center for Special Needs

Patrick Carman is a LIFEPlan member with a long history of supporting the facilities and organizations that have helped him and his family. The Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital is one of those organizations. Now Patrick' is supporting the addition of a new Special Needs Center at  the Syracuse area hospital.

Hi! My name is Patrick Carman.

My interest in music began during my elementary years. In middle school I found myself in many school musicals taking on a variety of roles. As I continued to grow so did my love for the theater life. This passion did not diminish with the toss of my graduation cap, in fact it grew more intense with supports from my family and friends.

10 years ago, I created and sold a CD of Broadway songs, and donated the proceeds to the Golisano Children's Hospital. Through this effort, $7,500 was raised, which exceeded my expectations...."

  Meet Eric Bentz
Member Relations Manager

Meet Jean Jacobson, PhD,
LIFEPlan Clinical Director. With 25 years experience in behavioral health focused on developmental disabilities, Dr. Jacobson will provide training, consultation and support to the LIFEPlan Care Management team related to health and behavioral health issues.

Dr. Jacobson is a licensed psychologist who comes to LIFEPlan from her previous role as Managing Director of Clinical and Education Services at Kelberman Center.

She has worked in the field of behavioral health for 25 years with a specialty in developmental disabilities.

Dr. Jacobson looks forward to providing training, consultation, and support to our Care Management team in our continued efforts to develop high quality (or “as we strive for excellence” etc.) services for our members and their families.

She has long aspired to help create a better world for families affected by developmental disabilities and is thrilled to have the opportunity to do so through LIFEPlan CCO.

Eric Bentz, new Member Relations Manager, is a 25 year veteran in the Human Services field, who attended SUNY Cortland to earn an Education degree. It was during this time he had the opportunity to work with students of varying abilities. 
It didn’t take long for Eric to realize his passion was supporting others to reach their goals. 
 
Throughout his career, Eric has worked in many different capacities, from direct care to administration, in Vocational Habilitation, Day Habilitation, Residential, Self-Direction and training.  
 
As LIFEPlan’s Member Relations Manager, Eric works in all six regions to support members and their families, with a goal of providing the best member experience possible. At the center of a great customer experience is learning what is important to members,”, said Eric when describing his role, “then providing information that is educational, meaningful and accessible.” 

Eric 
is working with many departments at LIFEPlan to shape how we support our members.
