MAY 2020

We will be airing a new weekly series offering wellness tips for better health, more solid recovery and happier living. Our holistic approach to recovery looks at the entire system of the body, mind and spirit to attain health, happiness and vitality. These are three elements that are most damaged by addiction to both the addict and their loved ones. At Sana Lake we work hard to help you restore them.

Wellness Wake Up with Bodhi offers insights and tips to help everyone restore vibrant health, maintain sobriety and live more fully. So break out those sneakers, dust off your journal and turn up the music. It’s time to feel alive again!

It is a pleasure to welcome and introduce Naomi LaFond, the newest member of Wellness Team at Sana Lake. Naomi’s outgoing personality and enthusiasm for fitness makes her a welcomed member of our team. Offering personalized coaching, evaluations, specific instruction and exciting fitness groups, Naomi provides another level of holistic care for our members.
"Hi, I’m Naomi, the new fitness coach/personal trainer. A little background about me, I am a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I’m very passionate about physical fitness and making that a part of a balanced wellness plan. I specialize in the kinetic chain and assessing what muscles are over worked vs underworked, what needs to be stretched vs what needs to be strengthened when it comes to correcting imbalances in the body. In my spare time I like to compete in Olympic lifting. (Clean and jerk, and snatch) I’ve been instructing aerobic classes since I was 18, and I like to dance and be silly. Exercise doesn’t have to be boring. I believe that there are many ways to get exercise in our lives, you have to find what makes your heart sing and go for it!"

Welcome, Naomi!

Recovery is about restoring the mind, body, and spirit. Alcohol and substance use can take a toll in all of these areas but particularly on the body and brain.  One of the easiest ways to begin healing is to start following a healthy diet.

Sana Lake believes in a holistic approach to health and wellness.  Under the review of a licensed dietitian our dietary staff work to provide healthy and well-rounded meals that include ingredients to increase serotonin and replenish vitamins.  That is why you will always see protein, and complex carbohydrates at every meal. Members not only get delicious, nutrient rich foods at meal times, but nutrition and diet are part of programming.

Sana Lake also recognizes the importance of food as comfort.   Members are allowed to make requests, and even have fun themed nights such as taco Tuesday, make your own pizza nights, steak night, and many special milestone meals such as birthdays, anniversaries, and recovery celebrations.

The Link Between Mental Health and Nutrition

Sana Lake Alumni

Sana Lake would like to welcome our new Continuing Care Advocate, Jakob Miller!
"My name is Jakob Miller. I am a Certified Peer Support Specialist and the Continuing Care Advocate at Sana Lake Recovery Center and Sana Lake Behavioral Wellness Centers.  I have been a Peer Specialist for a little over a year now and was a Substance Use Disorder Counselor at another facility prior to coming to Sana Lake Recovery Center. I am a person in recovery and find guidance in my Twelve Step Program.
Coming to Sana Lake was an easy choice for me because the Philosophy of care is member first and the ability to meet members where they are in their journey.  I live by the Philosophy to “Always be better today than yesterday” and this is what I teach our members too.  I want members to be action focused, feel understood, and know they are not alone in their recovery journey.  I will not only be there for them at Sana Lake but throughout their recovery journey in life.  I invite members to join me when transitioning care to my home groups, help them get to meetings, go out to dinner with them, and am just there for them whenever they would need me.
I also find joy in being a member of our family-based programming and helping families understand not only addiction but recovery. Most families do not know what the other side of active use is and that all members of the family can grow from this experience.  I teach against enabling and co-dependency and I encourage families to not only be involved in our family programming but to get help for themselves also.
Outside of Sana Lake and spending time with the members and their families I love spending time with my Long term Girlfriend and our 4 year old daughter."

Welcome, Jakob!

National Nurses Week

This year, more than ever, is a chance to recognize the outstanding contributions of nurses during National Nurses Week, May 6-12.

# Y E A R O F T H E N U R S E

Nursing is an incredible giving and caring people. My mother was the first nurse that taught me that. We are blessed and I am most grateful for the team of nurses we have at Sana Lake. I appreciate all that you do and how you do it for the benefit our members.

I would like to remind us all the importance of the staff in detox. We are one of the only treatment centers in our region that have a medically supervised detox and that sets us apart from others. Without the medical team, we would be without this important part of our care. And the nurses are the staff members that interact the most with the members in their first week as the average member is spending close to 6 days in detox where they spend much of their time. Often, the nurses’ skill and attitude have a huge impact on the members attitude to their own recovery. Again thanks for the skills and the wonderful attitude you bring to Sana Lake.

Mental Health Month

Substance Use is a Mental Disorder.
Although substance use is often considered a moral deficiency, a choice, a weakness, and other labels that support the unfortunate stigma, substance use disorders are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, and therefore, identified as mental illness. Merriam Webster defines mental illness as any of a broad range of medical conditions that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause marked distress or disability and that are typically associated with a disruption in normal thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions or daily functioning.
When recognizing individuals during this month, don’t forget those individuals suffering from Substance Use and Alcohol Use Disorders.
