CEO's Overview

The end of the financial year is always a busy time for Essential Personnel, but it's also a great time to reflect upon the year we have just had and the achievements we have made.

Some of our top achievements of 2020/2021 are:
  • 38% of our staff have a disability
  • 49% of our staff care for someone with a disability
  • We continue to support over 700 customers across the Wheatbelt and Metro area to achieve their lifestyle and employment goals
  • We have opened a new service Oakover House in Northam
  • We secured a new contract with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
  • We launched our Employment Buddy Program with Rise.

(Launch of Employment Buddy Program at the Perth Disability Service Provider and Participant Connection Expo)

We are really excited about this program as it provides a unique opportunity for 50 young people to become employment ready through using a combination of workshops and tailored coaching.

At the start of the program, the young person is asked about their dream job and behind the scenes we try to secure a placement for them in this role. Once we have secured the placement, the young person will then implement their learning via a recruitment process which reflects the real world. If they successfully secure the placement and complete the program they are invited to attend an awards ceremony. We have seen a growing interest in the program with many registrations coming through already.

One unique part of this program is that we are partnering with Rise to engage and upskill employers by facilitating a ‘Buddy training program’. This part of the program equips the employer with information relevant to the young person and disability, enabling them to provide an inclusive and quality placement.

How can you get involved:

  1. Please refer any young people that meet the criteria to the program here essentialpersonnel.org.au/EBP (criteria: 15-24 years, have a disability, can commit to 8 hours per week for 3 months); and/ or
  2. If you have a role in your organisation that you feel could provide the young person with a dream opportunity for 4 hours and you have a champion you would like to put forward to be a Buddy, email reception@essentialpersonnel.org.au

Please note, the young person does not need to have an NDIS plan, but must have a disclosed disability.

Kind regards,
Dawn McAleenan

WHAT'S NEW

Since the last newsletter, we have had another lockdown in Perth. Like many other services, these uncertain times have taught us to be agile and adapt to the changing circumstances without compromising on our service delivery to customers. Our staff have been engaging with customers to offer alternative supports especially to those who live independently in the community and could be at a further risk of isolation during lockdown.

Our respite home has been busy, with different customers accessing it throughout the month to enjoy a break, engage in activities of interest, or just to simply connect with people of similar age and make new friends.
Oakover house is a respite home in Northam which is staffed and equipped to support individuals with varying needs. It has:
  • Four comfortable bedrooms
  • Two bathrooms
  • Different activity spaces with TV, DVD, art and craft supplies
  • A patio with barbeque facilities
  • A fully equipped kitchen and dining area
Everyone deserves a break. If you are living at home with your family or looking after a loved one, we can support you to get a break. This vital respite can help you to remain living at home long term or when looking after someone long-term. A break may be provided through a range of activities and services. Whichever option you choose, we will listen to you, and support you and your family.

Please get in touch via emailing jacinta@essentialpersonnel.org.au or simply making an inquiry through our website essentialpersonnel.org.au and we will follow up with you.

From a personal reflection, since joining the organisation in November, I have been enjoying the diversity of services that I oversee and the positive impact they have on our community. Whether that is breaking down the barriers to employment for young people with disability, walking alongside our customers to find and sustain a job they love, or providing essential lifestyle services. We hope to continue to share this journey of building resilient communities through delivering services focusing on empowering and building independence.

Warm regards,
Navneet Kaur
Regional Manager
