Dear Friends of Brazil:
Thanks for signing the petition “Say No to Bolsonaro!” We have gathered amazing support among professors, students, activists, and Brazilians living, working, and studying in the United States. Over 1300 people have signed the petition from 38 states and 200 colleges and universities. I don’t think we have ever seen this kind of outpouring of support for Brazil among academics, students, and activists living in the United States. It was a major success.

At the same time, Barbara Weinstein, an historian of Brazil from New York University and the former president of the American Historical Association, circulated an Open Letter to Fernando Henrique Cardoso calling on him to clearly position himself against Bolsonaro. The Open Letter was signed by 20 prominent U.S and European social scientists and historians. At of this writing, the former president has not clearly and publicly positioned himself in favor of voting for Fernando Haddad, which is the only way to defeat Bolsonaro.
