UNEAFRO is a network that provides free educational resources and professional training to teenagers and adults living in low-income communities in Brazil, aiming to increase their access to higher education and employment.
The organization supports over 1,600 young Brazilians each year and is present in 31 marginalized neighborhoods in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. UNEAFRO courses have been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, however the organization will continue assisting these struggling communities by other means.
UNEAFRO has organized a crowdfunding for immediate support to the families affected by the escalating Covid-19 outbreak in the 31 low-income neighborhoods where UNEAFRO works. We are rigorously mapping the people and families most in need in order to guarantee that they will have minimal access to food, hygiene, and cleaning supplies.
The high density population of favelas and low-income neighborhoods are the result of structural inequalities which lead to poverty. Insufficient public policies, including lack of access to healthcare, public transportation, dignified housing, and basic sanitation all lead to substandard living conditions for low-income individuals especially those living in high density and overcrowded neighborhoods. Social distancing and self-isolation -- widely recommended measures to contain the Covid-19 outbreak -- are not possible in these overcrowded communities.
Many families depend on informal jobs; numerous people are unemployed and struggle with extreme poverty; many others already suffer with pre-existing health conditions. These people are in urgent need of help.
Only solidarity can now assist these communities.
Any contribution through this platform will be used to purchase food, hygiene, and cleaning supplies to be donated to low-income families.
