A Supply Chain Software Christmas Story

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a… well, that’s not quite correct.

There was some stirring in the Clause house as Santa slowly shifted positions in his easy chair, looking out the window into the howling snow storm outside. The weather forecast said the storm would be blowing over soon and, and truth be told, it wasn’t that bad of a snowstorm. Certainly not like the famous storm eleven years ago.

It is a Christmas story almost as old as Father Christmas himself. Your child – seemingly for months on end  has dropped hints about the toy that they absolutely must have this Christmas. You are left in no uncertain terms that if the said toy should not appear on Christmas Day there will be consequences. But then, of course, you go to the shops to find that they have sold out.

It is a horror that no parent wishes to face – but it is also something that consumer goods companies want to avoid at all costs.

Managing seasons and public holidays is a never-ending task for retailers. If there isn’t a public holiday then there will be a new season starting, or another one wrapping up with a sale.
Of all these special events, Christmas is undoubtedly the most important, and puts enormous pressure on supply chain managers to ensure products are available and that everything moves smoothly through the season. After all, it is the weeks just before Christmas that, in many retail sectors, determine a business’s financial health; John Lewis, for instance, reportedly generates 80% of its annual profits during Christmas period.
