Watertown Mayer Elementary School
Growth through Connections and Opportunities
December 6 , 2019
This month, our school-wide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements and social-emotional skills lessons, we’ll be prompting students to notice their feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
  • Stop - Use your signal
  • Name your feeling
  • Calm down - Breath, Count, Use Positive Self-Talk

These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.

Please let me know if you’d like more suggestions about supporting skills for learning at home or visit the Second Step website.

Deck the Halls!
Kindergarten students rotated through each kindergarten room creating a holiday craft in each to DECK THE HALLS!  Even the dinosaurs got a holiday makeover. It was a fun filled morning for all! Thank you to the parent volunteers that helped.
Fourth grade students got in on the Deck the Halls action and decorated their pod area in How the Grinch Stole Christmas fashion.
A Special Surprise for Two WMES Students
Sawyer and Teagan Kuhne were all smiles when their dad surprised them at school after returning home from deployment earlier than expected. Jake has been serving in the Army Reserves for 23 1/2 years. He is a Master Sergeant in the 407th Civil Affairs unit from Arden Hills. He was deployed to Poland for Operation Atlantic Resolve. His job in Poland was to help other military groups make sure they were doing useful and appropriate things to help out the local people. This is his 5th deployment. He left in the beginning of February and was gone for ten months. There are no deployments in the near future. We are so thankful to Jake for his service to our country!
Candy for Troops Update
WMES collected Halloween candy to send to troops serving overseas. We were amazed by the generosity of our students and families. We collected about 95 gallon sized baggies full of candy! Just a small way to thank our troops serving our country!

"Green" Children's Book Sale
Thank you to those that donated gently used children's books to support our literacy program and sustainability efforts at Watertown-Mayer Elementary School!

Your “recycled” book donations will be organized by students and set up at garage sale prices of $0.25, making it a great way to get books in the hands of our students.  Our “Green” Children’s Book Sale will take place Dec. 9-13. Teachers may bring their classes to the sale during school hours. Students may bring in some spare change to purchase some books.

All funds from our Green Book Sale will be donated to our media center for purchase of new literature for student check-out.

Thank you for all your donations and support!

Kindergarten/Third Grade Buddies
Students in Mrs. Guetzkow's kindergarten class enjoyed spending time with their Third Grade Buddies from Mrs. Kelzer's class.
Cold Weather Reminder
Please remember students are expected to go outside for recess unless the temperature is below 0 degrees. Please make sure your children are dressed for the weather including all five items - coats, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens - to ensure safe and enjoyable outdoor play.
