Tree Planting in the Park!
|
|
Last month, The Friends of Gwynns Falls/ Leakin Park in partnership with Baltimore City Trees and the Baltimore Tree Trust organized an tree-mendously successful tree planting. Volunteers from the local community and all 3 organizations came out to help our park's tree count grow! It was great to see all their teamwork and collaboration result in a unbe-leaf-able contribution to the park.

At Wild Haven Forest Preschool the children are enjoying exploring the trails, engaging with the flora and fauna found in the park, and spending as much time as possible outdoors. They're even napping under the beautiful, Autumn skies!

What are the CCC'ers up to?

Darrea and Christiana, our Chesapeake Conservation Corp Members, took a trip to the Eastern Shore last month to help the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in their celery seed pod project! They spent the day on the water collecting celery seed pods that are going to be studied, propagated, and then planted in streams that need their help! This type of aquatic grass is extremely helpful in keeping local streams clean and healthy. Thanks Darrea and Christiana!

Cub Scout Fun Day comes to CMNC
|
|
Carrie Murray hosted over 60 children and their chaperones last week for a Cub Scout Fun Day. The kids experienced Archery, Rockets and Wildlife, oh my! The photo below shows one of our Naturalists Sarah Lank showing our Black Rat Snake to one of the small groups since the day followed all COVID-19 guidelines -- small groups, social distancing and wearing masks.

Last week our Master Naturalist Trainees learned about the Science of Science with Paula Becker from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. During the field portion of this training the Trainees learned how to use their bodies as a means for measurement and participated in a fun activity that taught them about ecosystem health. The trainees have learned so much already and are excited to apply this knowledge in the field using these new strategies.

A Season of Gratitude
As Autumn has settled in and like the scurrying creatures of the forest we begin to prepare for the Winter ahead, let us not forget to take the time to reflect and sit in moments of gratefulness. While this year has been full of surprises, disappointments, and even heartbreak there is still much to be grateful for.
To celebrate this time of thankfulness here are a few things that the Staff at Carrie Murray are grateful for during this season:
"I'm grateful for the beautiful fall foliage we've had in our park this year, for the kindness I've received, and for hope and peace as we enter this new season."
"I'm grateful for supportive friends and good health."
"I'm very grateful for all my pets and the joy and comfort they bring!"
What are you grateful for? We encourage you to take time this week to sit outside in your favorite spot, breathe deeply, and reflect on the things you are thankful for. You could even write them down in a journal or share them with a friend!
