January Newsletter
Dear CMNC Community,

Hello and welcome to the first issue of the Carrie Murray Nature Center's newsletter in 2021! As we leave behind the losses and pain of 2020 let us keep moving forward with action that ends structured racism and ensures the rights of black, brown, and indigenous people of color. Let us conserve land, water, and wildlife. And let us remember the silver linings of a devastating pandemic. So many people walked, ran, and played indoors & outdoors to stay healthy. We discovered the peace and quiet of our urban natural spaces. We explored new ways of connecting with people virtually, bringing awareness, knowledge, comfort, laughter, music, dance, silliness, and joy. It is my wish that your small holiday gatherings brought you large amounts of peace, love and good health. As our first responders so bravely and tirelessly did, let us all take care of each other and the natural world as we enter the new light of 2021.

We are thrilled for a fresh new year and all the adventures it will hold. What will you discover this year? In this month's issue, we have exciting news and reflections to share with you. As well as updates and new programs that we are offering! You'll even find some inspiration and fun seasonal activities. There is something for the whole family in this month's edition of the Carrie Murray Nature Center's newsletter!

While the Nature Center remains closed due to COVID-19 protocols we are overjoyed to be able to continue offering an array of outdoor and virtual programs for all ages during the week and on weekends.

As always thank you so much for reading and for your support. We can't wait to see you on your next visit to the park!

In Winter Light,

Mary Hardcastle
CMNC Director

News & Highlights
Outdoor Discovery Wraps Up
Last month we held our last few weeks of Outdoor Discovery for the season. We investigated how the natural world changes with the seasons and what wildlife does in winter. We ended our last day by watching a beautiful sunset over Gwynns Falls Leakin Park next to a cozy campfire with yummy fireside treats! We are so grateful we had the opportunity to hold this program and offer a time of outdoor exploration to the youth in our community. Stay tuned for updates about this program in the Spring!
What are the CCC'ers up to?
Over Thanksgiving week, our Chesapeake Conservation Corps Member, Darrea Frazier, captured the title of 2020-2021 National All-American Miss Teen! Through the Maryland Master Naturalist program and other education and conservation efforts, she was able to highlight her community service with the Nature Center and the Chesapeake Bay Trust on a national stage. A massive congratulations to Darrea on this incredible accomplishment. We are honored to have you represent not only our Nature Center but also the great city of Baltimore.
Wild Haven Happenings
Wild Haven is welcoming 2021 with wide open arms! The snow was a wonderful surprise; we loved sledding in it, painting on it, and tasting it! We're spotting tracks on the trails, scat in the grass, and winter buds on the branches as we hike on into the new year.
Master Naturalist News
After 6 months of classes, trainings, and field trips our master naturalists have now gone from trainees to interns, and once they finish all their volunteer hours and they’ll be official Master Naturalists! Last month they all celebrated their amazing accomplishments with a campfire and certificate presentation. We are so excited to see all the great things this group will contribute to making our park the best that it can be. A HUGE thank you to Ela-Sita Carpenter for all the hard work she put into coordinating this program and all the support she’s given to this great group. Happy trails, Master Naturalists! We can’t wait to see what you all do in the future!
