FEBRUARY 27
A MARTY GROSZ 90TH BIRTHDAY DO
Marty Grosz & The Hot Winds perform "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" (1936, Billy Mayhew) from Jay Brodersen's documentary, Rhythm Is My Business: An Evening with Marty Grosz
An often hilarious raconteur, Marty Grosz—guitarist, banjoist, vocalist, and jazz historian—delivers the sounds of the 1930s with his brilliant chordal solos and Fats Waller-ish singing on the eve of his 90th birthday. A guest over the years on Prairie Home Companion, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and the Today Show, his terrific autobiography full of Who's Who dates and places is coming out in March. Come listen, say 'Hello', have some cake! martygrosz.com
Danny Tobias (trumpet, alto horn) is a frequent leader and sideman at Jazz On Broad, and regularly plays with David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band at Birdland, with Marty Grosz's Hot Wings, and with the Midiri Brothers’ Sextet at jazz festivals across the US. Read more...
Polymath and multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson is a musician of rare and refined capacities. Of the many instruments he plays (virtually all sizes of saxophone, trumpet, alto clarinet, theremin, ophicleide, and many others) Marty requested the bass saxophone for this evening—it's amazing. "Scott has performed in some thirty nations... performed at Carnegie Hall, at the Village Vanguard, at the Smithsonian Institution, and for the President of the United States." Read more...
Gary Cattley (bass, tuba) performs in jazz and classical contexts near and far, and is quite content doing so.
