July 2020 Newsletter

The big news this month is the RVT has been given permission to host a quiz and I'll be the guest quizmaster on 23 July, with a special murder mystery round. We hope to see you there at the RVT, which has been winning praise for its careful and safe re-opening.

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, home of Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote, has been given permission to host a weekly quiz with a guest host and I'm delighted to be at the helm on Thursday 23 July from 8pm. It's being done under specific conditions - there'll be no singing I'm afraid and you'll be marking your own answers, but I can promise a murder mystery round and some JB Fletcher magic. Also the venue only seats 70 at the moment to ensure social distancing so be sure and book soon - tickets are £3.
Thank you so much to everyone who joined in the Tweet-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote on 13 June and donated to our beloved venues. Some might say that live tweeting five episodes in a row was a little ambitious but when it involved a cruise, an art class and a gridiron changing room, the time flew by!
There's a delightful treat inside our latest book under review - nothing less than a feminist analysis of JB Fletcher. The book itself is a joyous celebration of Agatha Christie's books and adaptations, and includes an essay called "Jessica Fletcher: A Liberated Miss Marple?". Writer Emma Lathen praises JB for her globe-trotting and life experience over the village-bound Miss Marple. "Jessica is all energy from sparkling eyes to dimply elbows. Sitting still isn't her style." As one who loves both these silver sleuths, it's fun to see them going head-to-head.
The restrictions on live performances are gradually easing and while we're keen to get back to the regular shows, we'll only do so safely and according to the proper guidelines. Of particular concern are shows in which audiences become too excited, too vocal and engage in loud singing. It's hilarious and gratifying that together, we make watching an episode of Murder, She Wrote so ridiculously boisterous!

Thank you to the lovely fangela who alerted me to two fabulous Angela Lansbury films on Talking Pictures - Harlow and The Court Jester. Sadly there aren't any more coming up, but do check out the upcoming schedules at Talking Pictures and watch their Freeview channel. It's a fabulous independent film archive worth your support.

Brilliant author and fangela Jenny Hammerton is getting close to completing her Murder, She Wrote Cookbook, and many of you participated in her brilliant cook-along last year. Well my attempt at Angela Lansbury's Angel Hair Pasta with Fresh Summer Tomatoes has been added to the many online blogs. There's also a lovely clip of Jenny's hen do Solve-Along party, held prior to lockdown in my most intimate venue - a sitting room for 18 fans!
