Dear <<First Name>>,
As mentioned in our last newsletter, the purpose of 2019 World Table Tennis Day will be to bring about positive social change to society. According to the last World Drug Report by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, drug use has increased globally and consumption age of teenagers has shown to start at a younger age than in previous years.
We therefore, wish to invite you to make an impact on the next 6 April by being the first TT4Development - Drug Prevention event organisers. In order to show our commitment to this, the first two registered events with proven planification on the topic, will receive 2 WTTD T-Shirts.
Please find below further information, ideas and tips to help you organise your event successfully.
Why do teenagers begin to experiment with drugs?
Unfortunately, drug use can cause serious consequences to the user, family and his or her environment in general. For teenagers, this can lead to a decrease in school performance or simply dropping out of school, delinquent behaviour, violence, drug dependency and long-term physical and mental damage.
But what can we do to prevent drug use in teenagers?
The responsibility cannot only be in the hands of non-governmental organizations and governments, everyone needs to help in order to prevent this. Sport is a well-known antidote, in this way, we can contribute through table tennis.
In addition to having fun and developing new skills, table tennis and sports in general offer the opportunity to teach positive values and behaviours that may build the character of teenagers and prepare them for adulthood. The goal is to provide a safe environment for their development.
Some of the values and benefits which the practice of table tennis may bring:
- responsibility (in sport and school)
- healthy environment
- teamwork and a social environment
- respect
- hard work
- healthy life
- healthy relationships
- something to do
How to encourage teenagers to play table tennis?
The first thing to do is to organise an event for 2019 World Table Tennis Day. We recommend to begin the planification now to ensure a successful event. Plan activities in which everyone can participate, for those who are playing at the table and also for those who are waiting for their turn. It is important to keep participants active!
Some games you can implement are:
- Roller Ball Challenge
- Volley Rally
- Table Tennis Merry-Go-Round
- Beat the Champion

The most important is to: Create an environment, where everyone feels welcomed, included and motivated to participate. Don’t be shy! Put some music on and use attractive colours to decorate your event.
To ensure a impactful event, consider the following tips:
- Invite local schools or high schools to participate, it is important to involve the pre-teen ages as one of the main targets.
- Promote your event through social networks and/or local media
- Contact local authorities to promote the event
