Training movements vs. training muscles are two schools of thought that have a tendency of being at odds with each other.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both camps often embrace an "Us vs. Them" mentality.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Training movements is functional as we're an integrated system"; vs ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Muscles CREATE the movements. All you're ever training in the first place... is muscle"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These perspectives are both valid and that they each have unique costs/benefits & elicit unique adaptations.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Consider this...⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Training Muscle"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The human organism has a bias towards EASE & EFFICIENCY.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like water, we tend to take the path of least resistance. This leads to the body using what is strong while concurrently avoiding what is weak. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Without focused challenges on weaker regions, there is the possibility that the strong get stronger and the weak get weaker. The gap in function gets bigger. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That being said, there is also TREMENDOUS necessity to "Training Movements.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Movements have a higher skill component. Practicing the skill of moving is essential for efficiency and ultimately performing at a high level. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Movement rich, non-linear, unpredictable environments have been shown to be quite excitatory for the brain, in particular the cerebellum. And a healthy brain is a good thing for performance, emotional regulation and life.⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Training muscles (components) vs. training movements (skills) are both required for optimal function.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both perspectives are required.
No Pills. No stretching. No medication. No Massage. No Surgery. No Adjustments. No therapy.
